Women's Basketball Falls To Creighton In Omaha, 95-71

Both teams shot north of 50-percent, but Creighton benefited from 16 three-pointers and 27 points off of 19 Providence turnovers.

OMAHA, NEB. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe Creighton, 95-71, on Jan. 28 in Omaha, Neb.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Both teams were slow to find offense in the opening minutes of the first quarter.
• Creighton struck first on a three pointer from Payton Brotzki at the 7:45 mark, but Janai Crooms answered right back with a three of her own for the Friars 40-seconds later (3-3).
• The Bluejays pushed their lead to 12 (19-7) with 2:37 remaining in the quarter.
• The Friars went on a 5-0 run to close the gap to seven (19-12), but Creighton closed out the scoring to take a 24-12 lead into the intermission.
• Crooms scored 10 of the Friars' 12 points in the first quarter and was the only Friar to record a field goal. She shot 4-5 from the field, including 2-2 from three-point range.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars cut the lead to eight on two occasions early in the second.
• A 10-2 surge helped Creighton extend its lead to 39-23 at the media timeout (5:15). 
• Trailing by 19, Providence got a 5-0 spurt on buckets from Alyssa Geary and Nariah Scott to get within 14 (48-34) with 1:16 to go.
• The Bluejays closed the half with six unanswered points for a 54-34 lead.
• Providence shot 52-percent from the floor in the first half (13-25), including a 57-percent clip from beyond the arc (4-7).
• Despite the Friars hot shooting, the Bluejays were even hotter, hitting 66-percent from the floor (21-32), including a 9-18 performance from beyond the arc (.500).
• Crooms had 12 points at halftime, while Lauren Jensen paced the 'Jays with 13.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence cut the deficit to 15 on two occasions in the third, but each time the Friars made a run the Bluejays had an answer.
• Creighton used a 12-0 run to break the game open and gain a 27-point edge with 1:11 on the clock (75-48).
• The Friars trailed 79-51 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Trailing by a many as 31 in the fourth, Providence went on a 9-0 run to make it an 86-64 game.
• The Friars outscored the Bluejays 20-16 in the final frame overall, but fell by a final of 95-71.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Crooms led Providence with 16 points and six rebounds, while Geary netted 14 points.
• Freshman Audrey Koch scored a career-high 13 points on 5-7 shooting, including a 2-3 effort from behind the arc. 
• Scott contributed career highs in scoring (nine), rebounds (six) and assists (three).
• Providence finished 25-49 from the floor (.510), including 6-14 from beyond the arc (.429). The Friars also hit 15-19 attempts from the charity stripe.
• Creighton connected on 54-percent of its shots from the floor (34-63), including 16-34 from three-point land (.471). The 'Jays were 11-13 from the foul line.
• In addition to Creighton's impressive shooting performance, it also outscored Providence 27-14 in points off of turnovers.
• Jensen led four players in double figures for Creighton with a game-high 20 points.
• Morgan Maly added 17 points, as both she and Jensen combined to shoot 8-14 from three-point territory.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to the Ocean State to host No. 10/9 Connecticut at Alumni Hall on Sunday, Jan. 30. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be televised live on SNY.
