Puck Drop
Providence will travel to the University of New Hampshire to face-off with the Wildcats in two road matchups on Friday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m. followed by the series finale on Saturday, Jan. 8 for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop.
Last Time Out
The Friars will be returning for their first game in the New Year after earning a 3-1 victory on home ice against Vermont on Dec. 31.
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) netted two for the Friars, including the game-winning goal. Her first goal of the night landed her the No. 2 spot on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays. Hjalmarsson fired five shots on net and won eight of 14 face offs to help Providence to a come-from-behind victory. Freshman
Lily Martinson (Allen, Texas) added the third strike for the Friars on her first collegiate goal.
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) stopped 39 of 40 shots she faced on Friday, including 17 stops in the first period alone.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 8-5-5 overall and 5-4-2 in Hockey East play.
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) and
Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) lead the Friars in points with 14 and 12 points, respectively. The two are tied for the team-high in assists (eight) while Bochna leads in goals (six).
Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) ranks third on the team in points with nine, while sophomore
Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) trails Peterson with eight points.
Abstreiter and
Mireille Kingsley (Sudbury, Ontario) have both seen time in net for the Friars. Abstreiter has 11 starts, a 1.61 goals against average and a .948 save percentage. Kingsley holds a 1.40 goals against average and .950 save percentage with seven starts on the season. The sophomore posted her first shutout of her career against Princeton (Dec. 4) with 30 saves.
Abstreiter Earns Goaltender of the Month Honors
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for December 2021, as announced by the league on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Abstreiter has been previously recognized twice this season as Hockey East Goaltender of the Week. (Oct. 11 and Jan. 3).
Abstreiter started twice for the Friars in the month of December and secured two wins. Abstreiter recorded her second shutout on the season in a non-conference matchup against Princeton (Dec. 3), and recorded 34 saves in the 1-0 victory. In the New Years Eve Hockey East win against Vermont, 3-1, Abstreiter tallied 39 saves. The graduate student finished the month with .50 goals against average and a .986 save percentage. Her save percentage was the best in the nation among all netminders with at least two starts and her goals against was top among all goaltenders with at least two wins.
Hjalmarsson and Abstreiter Earn Hockey East Weekly Honors
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) and
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) were named Hockey East Player of the Week and Hockey East Goaltender of the Week, respectively, on Jan 3.
Hjalmarsson led the team in its 3-1 victory against the University Vermont on Friday, Dec. 31. Hjalmarsson scored twice in the second period to grab a lead for the Friars. Her first goal of the night was a shorthanded breakaway goal, which was unassisted. Her second of the night, assisted by
Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.) and
Isabelle Hardy (Oakville, Ontario), served as the game-winner.
Abstreiter was also recognized for her efforts between the pipes. She posted a combined 39 saves in the matchup versus Vermont for a .948 save percentage. This is Abstreiter's second Hockey East Goaltender of the Week honor this season.
Scouting New Hampshire
New Hampshire posts a 6-12-2 overall and 4-8-1 mark in the Hockey East. The Wildcats sit in the number eight spot in the conference standings with 13 points. New Hampshire most fell to Dartmouth in a nonconference matchup, 3-4 (OT), on Jan. 2.
As a team, the Wildcats average 2.5 goals per game while giving up 2.8. The Wildcats convert on 10% of power play chances and kill off 79.3% of penalties.
Who to Watch
UNH is led offensively by Brianna Brooks and Tamara Thierus, who have recorded 15 points apiece. Brooks and Thierus' 15 points both come from six and nine assists. The Wildcats have 22 players tallying at least one point this season.
Ava Boutilier has started a team-high 16 games this season. She posts a 2.57 goals against average and .916 save percentage. She holds a 6-10-0 record while tallying 447 saves.
