Jaxson Stauber made 37 saves as the No. 16 Providence College men's hockey skated to a 2-2 tie against Wisconsin in the title game of the 2021 Holiday Faceoff at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wis. The Badgers claimed the tournament title with a 2-1 win in the shootout.
- The teams skated through a scoreless first period as the Badgers held a 10-9 advantage in shots.
- Providence struck twice in a span of 1:01 during the second period on goals from
Matt Koopman and
Alex Esposito.
- Koopman finished off a rebound from a
Uula Ruikka shot for his third tally of the season at 12:06.
- Esposito notched his first goal as a Friar after buring a
Cody Monds feed into the slot.
Max Crozier also earned an assist on the play.
- The Badgers struck 2:05 into the third period on Corson Ceulemans goal to cut the lead to 2-1.
- Mathieu De St. Phalle tied the game at 15:55 off a scramble in the Providence crease.
- The Friars killed off the lone Wisconsin power play of the night at 16:22 after
Guillaume Richard and Dominick Mersch were both called for roughing and Richard was given an extra minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
- Neither team scored in overtime as the Badgers held a 5-1 shot advantage in the extra session.
- In the shootout,
Parker Ford and Brock Caufield each scored in the first round. Neither team would score again until Zach Urdahl's winner in the sixth round.
- Stauber made 37 saves and was named the Most Outstanding Goaltender of the tournament.

A Look at Merrimack...
The Warriors enter the weekend winners of two of the last three contests – a 7-1 win at Brown on Jan. 2 and a 4-1 win over Bentley on Jan. 8. Merrimack suffered a 4-3, non-conference setback to UMass on Jan. 3. Max Newton leads the way for the Warriors with 20 points on nine goals and 11 assists, while Filip Forsmark (9-7-16) and Declan Carlile (3-10-13) round out the top three in scoring. In goal, Zachery Borgiel has posted a 3.01 GAA and .887 save percentage in 12 games, but Hugo Ollas has started two of the last three outings, winning both and recording a 2.54 GAA and .901 save percentage overall this season.

Series History vs. Merrimack (PC leads 92-35-12, .705)
The Friars and Warriors will meet for the second and third times this weekend to close out the regular season series. Providence claimed the first matchup on Oct. 7 by a 5-2 score at Schneider Arena. Merrimack has won three of five meetings against the Friars dating back to 2020. Providence earned a 5-1 win in the last trip up to North Andover on Feb. 6, 2021.

Stauber Named Hobey Baker Nominee
Providence College junior goaltenderÂ
Jaxson Stauber (Plymouth, Minn.) has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in Division I men's hockey. Stauber ranks fourth in the NCAA with 14 victories, eighth in shutouts (3), 10
th in save percentage (.926) and third in minutes played (1305:53). The junior has surrendered two or fewer goals in 14-of-22 starts this season in posting a 2.11 goals-against average.

Taige Harding Added to the Roster
The Providence College men's hockey program has addedÂ
Taige Harding (St. Albert, Alta.) to the roster for the second half of the 2021-22 season. The 6-foot-7-inch, 230-pound defenseman will wear No. 27 with the Friars. A third-round selection (91
st overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2021 NHL Draft, Harding joins the Friars after spending two and a half seasons with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). As a captain for the Oil Barons in 2021-22, Harding ranked second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points in 37 games. He also was named AJHL Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. In 99 career games with Fort McMurray, he amassed 20 goals, 36 assists and 154 penalty minutes.

Balanced Scoring
Seven players recorded at least two points in Providence's season-opener against Army on Oct. 2 -

Patrick Moynihan (1-1-2),
Michael Callahan (1-1-2),

Guillaume Richard led the team with three points (1-2-3). Through 23 games, 21 players have already found the scoresheet, while freshmen have accounted for 35 points on 12 goals and 23 assists.

Special Teams Success
The Friars now ranks second in the NCAA on the power play with a .299 success rate. The penalty kill ranks eighth nationally, checking in at 89.3%. Providence had killed off 24-consecutive shorthanded situations before allowing a power-play goal to Princeton on Dec. 11.

Returning Production
Providence ranked sixth in the nation with 84 goals that returned this season. The 82% of returning goals ranked fourth nationally. The Friars also returned 76% of their points from last season, which also ranked sixth.

Youth Movement
The Friars have the 16th youngest roster in the NCAA this season (average age of 21 years, 11 months). Freshman Guilluame Richard is one of the younger players on an NCAA roster this year at 18 years and 8 months.

Fourteen Former Friars Participate in NHL Training Camps, Seven Earn Roster Spots
Providence boasts 14 former players that have participated in NHL training camps thus far in September. Noel Acciari (FLA), Kasper Bjorkqvist (PIT), Jacob Bryson (BUF), Vincent Desharnais (EDM), Jack Dugan (VGK), Brandon Duhaime (MIN), Jon Gillies (NYI), Mark Jankowski (NJ), Brian Pinho (WSH),
Greg Printz (ANA), Kevin Rooney (NYR), Brandon Tanev (SEA),
Tyce Thompson (NJ) and Jake Walman (STL). Acciari, Bryson, Duhaime, Rooney, Tanev, Thompson and Walman all made opening night rosters, while Duhaime made his NHL debut on Oct. 15 in Anaheim. On Jan. 2, Bjorkqvist made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal against the San Jose Sharks.

Engelbert Named Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 3
Providence College's
Jamie Engelbert (Cobourg, Ont.) was named Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Monday (Jan. 3). The junior forward shared the recognition with Boston College's Jack McBain.
 Engelbert was crucial during Providence's 6-2 win over Bowling Green at the Kwik Trip Holiday Faceoff last Tuesday, breaking a 2-2 tie in the second period and eventually recording a natural hat trick in the victory. Engelbert finished with a +3 rating and six shots on goal over the two games in Milwaukee.

Rookie defensemen
Guillaume Richard leads all NCAA freshmen with a +17 rating this season and ranks eighth overall in that category.
