Women’s Soccer Welcomes Sacred Heart For The Home Opener

Kick-Off is set for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Providence, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will host the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 6:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Last season, the Friars remained undefeated at home with a 5-0-2 record.

Friars Undefeated Against The Pioneers… Providence has won all four matches against Sacred Heart. This will be the Friars first time playing the Pioneers in 11 years. In their last meeting on Aug. 22, 2010, the Friars defeated the Pioneers 2-0 in Fairfield, Conn.
Friars Tie Rhode Island… In the season opener, Providence tied Rhode Island, 1-1, in double overtime. Sophomore Meg Hughes scored the lone goal for the Friars in the 26th minute. Sophomore Emma Bodmer returned to goal for her second season and had nine saves for the Friars marking a career high.
Bodmer Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week… Bodmer was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday, Aug. 23. On Aug. 19, Bodmer was tested against intrastate rival Rhode Island, making nine saves in the Friars' season opener. Her nine saves marked the most made by any goalkeeper in the league last week. The sophomore had four stops in overtime to keep the game tied, including three in the second bonus period. Bodmer's nine saves marked a career high for the second-year Friar.
Scouting the Pioneers… Sacred Heart was selected to finish third in the 2021 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Pioneers went 2-5-2 in the abbreviated 2021 spring season. Sacred Heart returns a full roster for the 2021 season along with nine freshmen to complete their roster. The Pioneers return four All-NEC Award winners including First-Team selection and leading scorer, junior Michelle Clarkin, who led the Pioneers with three goals and averaged 3.00 shots per game.
Friars Picked Fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, August 12. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Butler and UConn.
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four). At the conclusion of the season, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Newcomers… Providence welcomes five freshmen to the squad this season. Incoming freshmen include Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.), Victoria Bunz (Middleton, Wisc.), Olivia Rodman (Canton, Mass.), Maria Paveglio (Lake Orion, Mich.) and goalkeeper Tobi Whitmore (Grand Blanc, Mich.).
Up Next… The Friars will travel to Piscataway, N.J. to face Rutgers University on Sunday Aug. 29.
