Kick-off is set for Monday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College women's soccer team will travel to Villanova, Pa. to take on the Villanova Wildcats at Villanova Stadium on Monday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m. The Friars enter the match 6-2-1 overall, including a 4-2-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats hold a 2-9-2 overall record (1-5-2 BIG EAST).
Friars All-Time Against The Wildcats… Providence holds a 14-12-2 all-time record against Villanova. The Friars have won six of the last seven matches against the Wildcats.
In the first meeting in 2021, the Friars defeated the Wildcats, 4-0, on March 14 in Providence, R.I. Hannah McNulty, Samantha Adams, Elayna Grillakis and Meg Hughes each tallied the goals for the Friars.
Friars Shutout Pirates, 4-0…. Providence defeated the Seton Hall Pirates, 4-0, on Sunday, March 28 in Providence, R.I. Elayna Grillakis scored two goals, marking the first multi-goal game of her career. Meg Hughes had five points on the afternoon with one goal and three assists. Amber Birchwell recorded the fourth goal. Emma Bodmer registered eight saves in the victory.
Highlighting Hughes… Freshman Meg Hughes ranks in the top-10 in five different statistical catagories in the BIG EAST. Hughes ranks second in assists per game (.67), shot accuracy (.611) and total assists (six). The freshman also ranks fifth in points per game (1.33) and seventh in total points (12). Hughes leads the Friars in points (12), assists (six) and is tied for first in goals (three).
Undefeated At Anderson Stadium…Providence is undefeated at home this season, with a 5-0-1 record. The Friars have outscored their opponents, 16-1, at Anderson Stadium.
Clean Sheets… The Friars have recorded six shutouts in their first nine games this season. The all-time record for shutouts in a season is 10, set by the 2018 team.
Rookie Impact… Through nine games, four of the top-six point scorers on the team are freshmen. Meg Hughes leads the team with 12 points on three goals and six assists. Kyla Gallagher ranks tied for third among her teammates, with five points (1g/3a). Avery Snead is tied for third on the team with five points on two goals and one assist. Samantha Adams is tied for sixth in points (four) on two goals this season. Overall, Hughes, Gallagher, Adams and Snead have accounted for eight of the Friars' 17 goals overall.
Friars And Hoyas Settle For 0-0 Draw… Providence tied the #12 Georgetown Hoyas, 0-0, on March 25 in Providence, R.I. Both teams had 15 shots and four shots on goal. Providence had a few great chances in the game but was unable to find the back of the net. Emma Bodmer had four saves against the Hoyas.
UConn Defeats Providence, 2-0… The Huskies defeated the Friars, 2-0, on Sunday, March 21 in Storrs, Conn. Both UConn goals were scored in the second half. Providence had seven shots on goal in the second half, including a penalty kick from Avery Snead, but none of the shots were able to find the back of the net.
Friars Blank Wildcats… Providence shutout Villanova, 4-0, on Sunday, March 14 in Providence, R.I. Hannah McNulty, Samantha Adams, Elayna Grillakis and Meg Hughes tallied the goals for the Friars. Kyla Gallagher pitched in with two assists. Emma Bodmer and Sam Murray combined for the shutout. This is the fourth shutout of the season for the Friars.
Snead's Header The Difference As Friars Down Pirates, 1-0… Providence defeated Seton Hall, 1-0, on Thursday, March 11 in South Orange, N.J. Avery Snead scored the game-winning goal for the Friars in the 62nd minute off of a corner kick from Elayna Grillakis This is Snead's second game-winning goal of the season. Emma Bodmer recorded three saves in the shutout.
Friars Split Opening Week Of BIG EAST Play… Providence split its first two BIG EAST games of the season. In its first conference game of the season, on March 4, Providence defeated UConn, 2-1, in Providence, R.I. After falling behind 1-0, Esther Ronn scored late in the first half to tie the game to enter the break. Avery Snead scored in the 72nd minute from a header to the lower left of the net from an Amber Birchwell cross deep into the box. Emma Bodmer (registered six saves on the afternoon.
On Sunday, March 7, the Friars fell to the No. 21 Georgetown Hoyas, 1-0, in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas scored the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
McNulty Moving Up… Hannah McNulty currently ranks sixth all-time in career scoring at Providence. McNulty has scored 24 goals and has added seven assists for 55 points during her career. Through nine games of the 2021 spring season, McNulty is tied for second on the team in goals (two).
Filling Big Shoes… Freshman Emma Bodmer has settled in as the Friars' starting goalkeeper . Bodmer replaces former Friar and current NWSL goalie Shelby Hogan. Hogan was a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree and 2019 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. Bodmer has started all nine games for Providence. She has recorded 30 saves and has allowed four goals. Bodmer currently has four shut-outs, two combined shut-out and a .882 save percentage. Bodmer has been named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week three times and BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll once this season.
Shut-Out The Ocean State… Providence defeated Ocean State foes, Rhode Island and Bryant, by a combined 6-0 score in back-to-back matches to open the season.
Providence defeated Rhode Island, 2-0, in its season opener on Feb. 14. Senior Amber Birchwell and freshman Meg Hughes each tallied a goal in the second half for the Friars. Freshman Emma Bodmer registered three saves in her first career start and shut-out in a Friars uniform.
Providence defeated Bryant, 4-0, on Sunday, Feb. 21. Kyla Gallagher, Anna Kalooski , Samantha Adams and Hannah McNulty each tallied second-half goals for the Friars. Emma Bodmer and Sam Murray combined for the shut-out. Bodmer has not allowed a goal this season in 166:26 minutes of action, while Murray has held opponents scoreless for 13:32.
Awards All Around… Emma Bodmer and Meg Hughes claimed BIG EAST Weekly Awards on March 29 following their performances in the 0-0 tie against #12 Georgetown and a 4-0 victory over Seton Hall. Bodmer registered back-to-back shutouts and tallied 12 saves on the week. Hughes had an impact on all four of the Friar goals against Seton Hall. Hughes scored one goal and assisted on the other three goals in the victory.
On March 15, Avery Snead earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and Emma Bodmer was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following their performances in the 1-0 victory over Seton Hall and 4-0 victory over Villanova. Additionally, Snead was named United Soccer Coaches' Player of the Week.
Avery Snead was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (3/8) following her performance in the 2-1 BIG EAST opening game victory over UConn. Snead scored on her only shot attempt of the game, and it marked her first career goal in a Friar uniform.
Emma Bodmer, Alexis Rothmann and Kyla Gallagher were named to BIG EAST Weekly Awards (2/22) following their performances against Bryant. Bodmer was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and Alexis Rothmann was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, Kyla Gallagher was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Emma Bodmer, Amber Birchwell and Meg Hughes all earned BIG EAST Weekly Awards (2/15) following their performances against Rhode Island. Bodmer was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper on the Week, while Birchwell and Hughes were BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honorees.
Scouting the Wildcats… The Wildcats hold a 2-9-2 overall record, 1-5-2 in BIG EAST play.
In their most recent match, on April 1, the Wildcats fell to the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels, 1-0.
Villanova has scored five goals in 13 games. The five goals have come from five different goal scorers.
Megan McClay has been the primary goalkeeper for the Wildcats. She has appeared in 11 games, starting all 11. McClay has 56 saves on the season, a .824 save percentage and 1.21 goals against average.
Friars Picked Third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll East Division… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Monday, Feb. 1. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BIG EAST has split into two divisions for the upcoming season. The East Division is comprised of: Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, UConn, St. John's and Seton Hall. The MidWest Division is: Xavier, DePaul, Butler, Marquette and Creighton. The Friars were picked to finish third among 6 BIG EAST schools behind Georgetown and Villanova.
McNulty was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition. McNulty was a unanimous selection on the Preseason-All BIG EAST Team. She started all 20 games for the Friars last season. She led the team in points (18) and goals (nine), including four game-winners. McNulty went on to earn All-BIG EAST First-Team honors at the conclusion of the season.
Newcomers… The Friars welcome eight freshman and two transfers to the squad. Incoming freshman include Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.), Emily McCalligett (Warwick, R.I.), Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.), Anna Kalooski(Greene, R.I.), Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.), Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.), Grace Murphy (Penfield, N.Y.) and Samantha Adams (Northport, N.Y.). Esther Rønn (Copenhagen, Denmark) joins the Friars after spending a year at the University of Copenhagen while Sara Vijfhuizen (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) transferred from NAIA's University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Both transfers have three years of eligibility.
Up Next… The Friars return home for their final regular season home game against the St. John's Red Storm on Thursday, April 8 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. This marks the first meeting between the teams.
