Women’s Soccer Defeats Villanova, 2-1

Amber Birchwell scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute.

Villanova, Pa. – The Providence College women's soccer team defeated the Villanova Wildcats, 2-1, on Monday, April 5 at the Higgins Sports Complex in Villanova, Pa. Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal for the Friars in the 88th minute. The Friars improve to 7-2-1 overall, 5-2-1 in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats drop to 2-10-2 overall, 1-6-2 in BIG EAST play.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
-The game was scoreless at the half.
-Providence held a 9-4 shot advantage at the break. Six of the Friars' nine shots were on goal. 
-Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) recorded two saves in the first half.
-Birchwell led Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) in the center of the box who scored with her right foot to the bottom left of the net to put the Friars ahead in the 61st minute.
-Villanova's Alexa Wojnovich scored for the Wildcats in the 86th minute to tie the game, 1-1.
-Birchwell scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute. Birchwell scored with her right foot to the right side of the net to put the Friars ahead, 2-1.
-Providence outshot Villanova, 16-13. Providence had 12 shots on goal while Villanova had six.
-Birchwell now has eight game-winning goals of her career.
