Women’s Soccer Ties St. John’s, 1-1

Amber Birchwell scored the Friars' lone goal.

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team tied the St. John's, 1-1, on Thursday, April 8 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Entering the game, Providence needed to win each of its last two games to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, and the today's result will prohibit the team from qualifying. The Friars moved to 7-2-2 overall, including a 5-2-2 mark in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm are now 5-4-2 overall, 2-4-2 in BIG EAST play.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
-St. John's tallied the first goal of the game in the 34th minute. Jessica Garziano took a shot from the top left of the box and hit crossbar before bouncing across the goal line.
- The Red Storm maintained its 1-0 lead at halftime.
-Providence outshot St. John's 8-2 in the first half. The Friars had two shots on goal, while the Red Storm had one.
Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) found Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) inside the box on a free kick, and Birchwell converted the game-tying goal in the 57th minute.
-The score was tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation.
-Providence outshot St. John's, 9-6, in the second half. The Friars had six shots on goal and the Red Storm had five in the half.
- Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) had five saves in the second half.
-Providence registered the only shot in the first overtime period.
-St. John's recorded the only shot in the second overtime period.
-The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
- The tie knocked Providence out of the BIG EAST Tournament contention. UConn now advances to the BIG EAST Tournament as the second seed in the East Division.
-The Friars qualified for six-straight BIG EAST Tournaments entering the 2020-21 season.
-With her assist in the 57th minute, McNulty is now tied for fifth on the Friars' all-time scoring list, with 56 points (24 goals/8 assists).
