Field Hockey Scores With One Second Left In Regulation To Defeat Quinnipiac

4/3/2021 3:01:00 PM | Field Hockey

Sophia Pompeo notches the game winner, marking the first goal of her career.

HAMDEN, CONN. – The Providence College field hockey team got a 1-0 victory over BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac on April 3, as Sophia Pompeo deflected the ball into the back of the net with one second left in regulation. The play was set up by the speed of Niamh Gowing, who carried the ball down the right side of the field and into the circle as time was winding down. She fed the ball to the mouth of the goal, where Pompeo converted, with a second to spare.

FIRST QUARTER:
Marlies Kool drew a corner for the Friars with 7:09 left in the first quarter, giving Providence the first scoring opportunity of the game. However, a bid on cage by Amanda Collins was cleared away by the Bobcats' goalkeeper.
• Providence kept the offensive pressure on, putting two more shots on target over the next few minutes.
• Kool drew another corner for the Friars with two-seconds left on the clock, but Collins' shot from the top of the circle was wide of the cage.
• The Friars led in shots (4-0), shots on goal (3-0) and corners (2-0) during the opening 15 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER:
• Quinnipiac generated two corners in the first three minutes of play in the second quarter, but both attempts were turned away by the Friars' defense.
• Just over 21 minutes into the game, Providence got its first offensive corner of the second quarter, but the shot attempt by Gowing was whistled high.
• Gowing had two more quality chances on cage during the next several minutes, but Quinnipiac's goalkeeper managed to stop both shots.
• The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie at halftime (0-0).
• In the opening 30 minutes, Providence led in shots (7-1), shots on goal (5-1) and penalty corners (3-2).

THIRD QUARTER:
• Quinnipiac earned a penalty corner with 7:13 left on the clock in the third, during which the Bobcats got a good look on goal but was blocked by a Friar defender.
• At the 42-minute mark, Kool and Marley Mailloux each attempted back-to-back shots. The first was saved by the goalkeeper, and the second was blocked by a defender.
• Providence requested a video review of the play, which ultimately resulted in a penalty corner for the Friars, with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter.
• Gowing's feed to the right post was deflected wide by a defender and Olivia Ward was able to fire a shot on the ensuing possession but went wide.
• Providence notched its second corner of the quarter and fifth of the game with 48-seconds left on the clock, and Collins hit the post on her shot.
• The Friars recorded another penalty corner on the play and Gowing's attempt was deflected off the cross bar and out of play.
• The game remained scoreless heading into the final frame.

FOURTH QUARTER:
• Providence earned another great scoring chance with 7:19 to play as Pompeo deflected a feed from Gowing off a corner. But Quinnipiac held firm at the goal line.
• With less than five minutes to play, Providence was assessed a green card and Pompeo was sent off for two minutes.
• Quinnipiac used its advantage to put the pressure on offensively, resulting in two shot attempts.
Asia Porter made a great save on a back-handed attempt by Julianna Cappello, and the Friars would resume possession.
• The Friars earned a penalty corner after carrying the ball into the circle, but Nora Goddard-Despot's deflection went up and over the cross bar.
• Providence won the game with one second left on the clock as Gowing used her speed down the right side and into the circle, where she fed the ball to Pompeo for the deflection at the right post.

NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The game winner marked the first career goal for Pompeo.
• Porter collected two saves in goal for Providence, marking her first shutout and first career win overall.
• Providence dominated the game, leading Quinnipiac in shots (17-6), shots on goal (8-2) and penalty corners (9-4).
