No. 9 Women’s Hockey Meets No. 1 Northeastern In Hockey East Championship Game

The third-seeded Friars (No. 9) are set to travel to Boston, Mass. on Saturday, March 6 for the Hockey East Championship game versus number one seeded Northeastern University (No. 1). Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on NESN.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars enter the Hockey East Championship game with a 12-6-1 overall record and 10-6-1 mark in Hockey East.
The Friars defeated the #4 seeded University of Maine in the Hockey East Semifinal game in overtime, 1-0, on March 3 at Schneider Arena. Both teams skated through the entire 60 minutes of regulation scoreless, with the Black Bears outshooting the Friars by a 31-22 margin over the first three periods. Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Friars, 2:10 into extra time. Giana Savastano (Mapleville, R.I.) tipped the puck to Barnett who put it past Porter. Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) earned the secondary assist on the goal. Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) stopped all 33 shots faced in net, improving her save percentage to .930 and goals against average to 1.89.
Hjalmarsson leads the charge offensively for the Friars with 17 points (five goals, twelve assists). Becker and Peterson are tied for second with 14 points apiece. Becker has three goals and 11 assists, while Peterson, who leads the team in goals, has seven goals and seven assists. 18 different Friars have points on the season and 13 players have recorded at least one goal. Providence boasts a 22.2% power play percentage, ranking third in the nation.
Abstreiter has made 19 starts in net. Her .930 save percentage ranks sixth in the nation as does her goals against average (1.89). The netminder has made 446 total saves and has 3 shutouts.
Regular Season vs. Northeastern

Northeastern claimed victory in all three games, defeating Providence 4-0 in a road matchup (Jan. 12) and sweeping the Friars in a weekend series, 4-1 (Jan. 22) and 5-0 (Jan. 23). Freshman Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) put up the lone goal of the season against the Huskies, assisted by Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.).

Providence has made six total appearances in the Hockey East Championship Game. The Friars have a 3-3 record in those appearances. The team's last appearance in the Championship game was in 2012, when they were edged by Boston University, 2-1, in a double overtime game.
The team's overall playoff record in Hockey East is 19-19. Last season, they were the #3 seed and fell to sixth-ranked New Hampshire in two games in the Quarterfinal Round. Providence has won three Hockey East titles. The team hoisted the Bertagna Trophy in 2003, 2004 and 2005. These were the first three Hockey East Championships in the history of the league.

The Huskies defeated UConn on Wednesday, March 3 in the Hockey East Semifinal round, 2-1. Chloe Aurard scored the game-winning goal shorthanded at the 15:22 minute mark of the third period, breaking the team out of a 1-1 tie.
This will be the team's fourth match-up of the 2020-21 season, with Northeastern holding a 3-0 record over the Friars. As a team, the Huskies average 4.24 goals per game and allow less than one (0.67). Converting on 21.1% of power plays and killing off 96.6% of penalties, the Huskies place fourth in the NCAA in power plays and are first in penalty kill percentage. The team also leads the nations in goals, wins, and short-handed goals.
Who to Watch
Alina Mueller leads not only the Huskies offensively, but places first in the NCAA in points (35) and assists (24). Additionally, she leads the nation in power play points scored (11) and has +32 on the season. Alina Mueller was named Hockey East Co-Player of the Year alongside teammate Aerin Frankel. Frankel, a senior netminder, leads the nation in save percentage (.972) and goals against average (.63). She also leads the NCAA in wins (17) alongside nine shutouts, two of which have been against the Friars. Other top scorers for the Huskies include Chloé Aurard and Skylar Fontaine, both of whom have over twenty points on the season (25 and 23, respectively). Mueller, Aurard and Fontaine are the top-three point scorers in the league, in that order.
