Raleigh, N.C.- The Providence College men's and women's track and field opened their seasons at the Raleigh Relays on March 25-27 at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility.
Highlighting the women's side,
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) finished fifth overall (15:46.87) and
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) placed second in her section(16:09.56) of the 5,000-meter. Tuck's time was a personal-best. In the 10,000-meter,
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) placed fourth (34:05.22).
On the men's side,
Chris Shanahan placed tenth overall, first in the BIG EAST, in the javelin (60.44-meters). In the 1,500-meter,
AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) and
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) finished second (3:45.55) and third (3:45.57) in their section, respectively.
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) crossed the line in 11
th (29:10.50) in the 10,000-meter.
Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) finished second in his section of the 5,000-meter (13:57.49). Gallagher's time, 13:57.49, is a personal-best by 20 seconds.
Based on previous years' performances, Wheeler, Tuck, Coffin, Rocha and Gallagher should qualify for the NCAA First Round in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 27-29.
Other Notable Performances:
-The women's 4x400-meter relay team of
Halle Atkinson (Hopkinton, Mass.),
Taylor Newman (Old Tappan, N.J.),
Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and
Catherine Stolbof (Red Bank, N.J.) finished in 3:53.94.

Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.) improved his lifetime best time by eight seconds in the 1,500-meter (3:50.54).
-Atkinson won her heat and had a personal-best in the 800-meter (2:10.49).
