Alyssa Geary netted a career-high 22 points for the Friars, who played their first game since Jan. 9.
VILLANOVA, PA. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Villanova, 67-53, in BIG EAST play on Feb. 3. It marked the Friars' first game since Jan. 9 due to COVID-19 issues within the program. Providence dropped to 5-8 overall (3-5 BIG EAST), while Villanova improved to 11-3 (6-3 BIG EAST).
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Friars scored the first three points of the game at the foul line and didn't hit their first field goal until the 4:35 mark on a Mary Baskerville lay-up to tie the game, 5-5.
• Villanova held an 8-7 lead at the first quarter media timeout (3:04).
• The Wildcats took their largest lead of the of the quarter (13-9) but went scoreless the remainder of the frame.
• Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored Providence's final six points in the quarter, tying the game, 13-13, at the break. She led all scorers with seven points in the opening 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER:
• The two teams traded baskets to open the second quarter.
• Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Oklahoma) got loose on the left block to tie the game, 17-17, with 6:42 on the clock before the Wildcats mounted a 22-17 lead with five straight points, forcing a Providence timeout.
• Villanova extended the run (16-0) to increase its lead to 33-17 with 2:36 on the clock.
• Geary got the Friars back on the board with a mid-range jumper with 1:23 left and followed with a pair of free throws with five-seconds left to get PC within 12 at the half (33-21).
• Geary scored a team-best 13 points in the opening half on 4-9 shooting from the field and a 5-6 performance from the foul line.
• Turnovers proved costly for the Friars in the first half, as Villanova converted eight Providence miscues into 15 points.
• Villanova committed seven turnovers, but the Friars managed just four points.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Geary scored five points in the first two minutes of the third quarter to reach a career-high of 18 points.
• Providence cut the lead to seven on a Geary lay-in at the 5:30 mark (37-30).
• It marked Geary's first career 20-point game with the Friars.
• The Friars crept within six (40-34) on a driving take from Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) with 1:52 remaining in the quarter.
• Orlando converted a pair of free throws with 32-seconds left to make it a five-point game (41-36).
• Villanova hit two of three free throws in the closing seconds to take a 43-36 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

• Villanova regained a double-digit lead with a three-pointer by Brianna Herlihy with 5:39 left to play.
• Herlihy's three sparked an 8-0 run, which pushed Villanova's lead to 15 (60-45) with under five to play in the game.
• Kyra Spiwak halted the run with a pair of free throws (60-47).
• Providence held an 8-7 scoring edge to finish the game, but the Wildcats claimed a 67-53 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary finished the day with a career-best 22 points to lead all scorers.
• Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) was the only other Friar to crack double digits in the scoring column, with 10 points.
• Spiwak was held to single-digits for the first time this season during BIG EAST regular-season play (seven points) but dished a career-high six assists and added three rebounds.
• Orlando hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds and contributed four points and two assists.
• The Friars dished 15 assists on 18 made field goals.
• Providence held Maddy Siegrist, the BIG EAST's leading scorer (23.8 ppg) to single digits for the first time this season, snapping a streak of 14-consecutive games overall in double figures.
• Siegrist finished the day with nine points and seven rebounds.
• Sarah Mortensen led the Wildcats with 18 points, while Lior Garzon came off the bench to score 15.
