Comeback Effort Falls Short At Seton Hall, 67-55

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 67-55, on Saturday, Feb. 10 in South Orange, N.J. Junior Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) narrowly missed out on the second double-double of her career, finishing the day with 17 points and nine rebounds.
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Friars used an 8-0 run to take a 14-11 lead midway through the opening quarter.
• Providence took its three-point advantage into the media timeout (4:25) as five different players cracked the scoring column, combining to hit 6-of-8 attempts from the field.
• Seton Hall regained the lead (15-14) with 2:32 on the clock as Andra Espinoza-Hunter drilled the Pirates' fourth three-pointer of the game.
• Seton Hall held a 19-16 advantage at the conclusion of the opening 10 minutes.
• Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) paced the Friars with five points, while Mya Jackson chipped in a team-best six points for the Pirates.
• Both teams checked in at 53.8-percent from the field, each hitting 7-13 attempts from the floor.
• The difference on the scoreboard was a 4-5 showing from three-point territory by Seton Hall, compared to 1-3 performance for the Friars.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Seton Hall opened the action with four-straight points before Geary got Providence on the board with a three-pointer at 7:59, making the scoring 23-19.
• Providence went scoreless over the next 1:31 and called a timeout as the Pirates mounted a 27-19 lead at the 6:28 mark.
• Geary hit a deep jumper out of the break and the Friars got back within six (27-21).
• The Pirates finished the second quarter on a 9-2 scoring run, including a 6-0 spurt over the final 1:52, to take a 42-27 lead at halftime.
• Seton Hall took advantage of nine Providence miscues in the half and outscored the Friars 10-2 in points off of turnovers.
• Geary led the Friars with nine points at halftime on 4-6 shooting, while three Pirates eclipsed double digits in the scoring column, led by Jackson's 13 points.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Seton Hall opened a 20-point lead (48-28) after outscoring Providence 6-1 early in the third.
• The Pirates maintained their 20-point edge going into the media timeout with 5:17 to play (52-32).
• Providence scored its first field goal of the third quarter at the 3:32 mark, after missing its first five shots from the field.
• The Pirates outscored the Friars 16-13 in the third quarter and took a 58-40 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
• Seven of the Friars' 13 points in the third came from the free throw line (7-8).
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Providence outscored Seton Hall 7-2 early in the final frame to get within 13 (60-47).
• Geary knocked down a triple with 3:40 left in regulation to make it a 10-point game (61-51).
• After back-to-back buckets by Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) and Grace Efosa (Lawrence, Mass.), the Friars remained within striking distance at the 1:30 mark (65-55).
• Seton Hall held on to claim a 67-55 victory.
