Women's Hoops Falls To Marquette, 73-52

Mary Baskerville recorded a game-high 19 points and added a career-best six steals.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team played its first home game since Jan. 7 and celebrated its four seniors, but fell to Marquette, 73-52, on Feb. 13. The Friars dropped to 6-9 on the year (4-6 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improved to 14-4 (11-3 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Friars were forced to call timeout just 56-seconds into the game after quick layups from Marquette's Jordan King and Chloe Marotta.
• Marquette extended its lead to 13-0 to start the game before the Friars got on the board at 5:48 on an Alyssa Geary hook in the paint (13-2).
• Marquette led by as many as 15 (22-7) with 1:37 left on the clock.
• The Friars managed to cut the deficit to 10 (22-12) at the break.
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) paced the Friars with five points, while Jordan King scored seven points for Marquette.
 
SECOND QUARTER
• Providence scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to cut the lead to 22-16.
• The Golden Eagles answered with eight-straight points to regain a 14-point lead during a span of 3:26.
• After a Providence timeout, Baskerville got loose on the right block for the Friars and converted off a feed from Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.).
• Marquette took a 39-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• The Golden Eagles shot 55-percent from the field in the first half (17-31), while the Friars checked in at 29-percent (9-31).
• Spiwak led the Friars in scoring with seven points, while Selena Lott paced the Golden Eagles with eight points.
• Marquette scored 24 of its 39 points in the paint.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• The two teams traded buckets for the first four minutes of the quarter before Taylor Valladay scored four-straight points for Marquette heading into the media timeout for a 48-27 lead (4:52).
• Baskerville collected two steals and then scored on the offensive side each time during a span of a minute, forcing a Marquette timeout at the 2:24 mark (48-32).
• The Golden Eagles led by as many as 21 (53-32) with 42-seconds left.
• Marquette held a slim 16-15 scoring advantage in the quarter and took a 55-37 lead into the final 10 minutes.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• An 7-2 run got the Friars within 12 (59-47) with 5:27 remaining in regulation.
• Marquette came out of the timeout to score five-straight points, extending its lead to 64-47 en route to the 73-52 win.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Baskerville led all scorers with 19 points on 9-13 shooting from the field.
• She also added two blocks, two rebounds, two assists and a career-high six steals.
• Spiwak netted 15 points on the day and was 4-4 from the free throw line. Spiwak entered the game ranked second in the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage and has made each of her last 15 attempts at the stripe.
Chanell Williams dished four assists in the game and moved into 14th place on the Friars' all-time list (293) passing Sony Lewis '94 and Paulette Hassett '78.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) finished the day with six points, two blocked shots, one assist and one steal to go along with her team-high seven rebounds.
• Prior to the game, the Friars honored their senior class of Spiwak, Williams, Cooper and Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence College will hit the road for back-to-back games at Seton Hall and St. John's. The Friars will face the Pirates at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 in South Orange, N.J. On Sunday, Feb. 21, Providence will take on the Red Storm at 2:00 p.m. in Queens, N.Y.
