Short-Handed Friars Fall To UMass, 80-62

Alyssa Geary scored a career-high 24 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to UMass, 80-62, on Nov. 23 at Alumni Hall. The Friars had just eight players available for the game due to various injuries. Four of those eight players were freshmen.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• UMass got out to a 6-0 lead having connected on its first three shot attempts of the game.
• Providence answered with a 10-0 run over the next 3:02, giving the Friars a 10-6 lead heading into the media timeout (4:58).
• The Friars continued their run out of the timeout as Alyssa Geary hit a baby hook in the paint.
• UMass got back on the scoreboard after a scoreless streak of just over four minutes with a lay-in from the right block to make the score 12-8.
• Providence finished the quarter with an 8-4 scoring advantage, capped by a three-pointer from Janai Crooms at the buzzer.
• The Friars took a 20-12 lead into the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence started the scoring with a three-point bucket to take an 11-point advantage.
• A 7-0 run got UMass within 23-19.
• Providence used an 8-3 run to extend its lead to 31-22.
• UMass put together a 11-0 run late in the quarter to take a 35-34 lead with 56-seconds to play.
• The Friars had a chance to take the lead on their final possession but Crooms' runner in the lane was too strong.
• Crooms paced the Providence offense with 10 points on 4-8 shooting, while UMass got 15 points from Sydney Taylor.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Geary opened the third quarter with a bucket inside the paint, helping PC regain the lead (36-35).
• UMass responded with a 14-0 run over the next 5:04 to take it largest lead of the game 49-36.
Olivia Olsen halted the run, but the Minutwomen answered on the other end with a three from the left wing (52-38).
• UMass outscored the Friars 9-5 down the stretch to take a 61-43 lead at the break.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Geary was responsible for eight of the Friars' 10 points in the fourth quarter at the media timeout (3:50), with UMass leading 74-53.
• The scoring was even overall in the fourth (19-19), and UMass left Alumni Hall with an 80-62 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary recorded her first 20-point game of the season and second of her career.
• She finished the game with a career-high 24 points and added seven rebounds and four assists. 
• Crooms and Sampson each finished in double figures for the Friars, with 10 points apiece.
• Olsen hauled in a career-high nine rebounds for Providence and added four points, one assist and one steal.
• Taylor with 26 points, while Angelique Ngalakulondi added 17 points and 11 boards.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 28 against non-conference foe Monmouth. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
