Women's Basketball Defeats Monmouth, 64-34

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team (2-4) earned a 64-34 victory over Monmouth University (2-2) in non-conference action today (Nov. 28) at Mullaney Gym in Alumni Hall. With the win, the Friars improved to 9-0 all-time versus Monmouth. The Friars were led by freshmen Olivia Olsen who recorded a game and career-high 12 points and added six rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Junior Janai Crooms added four points and 15 rebounds for the Friars.
"I was pleased with our defense," Providence Head Coach Jim Crowley said. "Offensively, we shared the ball well. We got a lot of people involved, which was good to see after a tough three game stretch that we had. We also had some good leadership today as we try to get better every day."
1st Quarter:
• The Friars outscored Monmouth, 17-6, after the first 10 minutes of play.
• Senior Alyssa Geary got the Friars going early as scored five points in the first 10 minutes of action.
• Senior Mary Baskerville entered the game, and gave the Friars an immediate spark, scoring eight points over the remainder of the first quarter.
• The Friars shot 57 percent from the field in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter:
• Providence outscored Monmouth, 13-7, in the second quarter
• The Friar defense was tough in the second quarter, holding Monmouth to just 7 points.
• After 20 minutes of play, Baskerville led all in scoring with 10 points.
• The Friars dominated in the paint, scoring 22 of their 30 points after 20 minutes of play.
• Providence held the advantage on the boards, 23-14 after two quarters.
3rd Quarter:
• The Friars outscored Monmouth, 18-8, in the third quarter.
• The Friars got hot from outside the perimeter and extended their lead to 40-16 with consecutive threes halfway through the quarter.
• The Friars shot 2-4 from beyond the arc in the third quarter.
• Geary led the Friars with six points in the third quarter.
• Emily Archibald chipped in five points in 4:23 of action in the third quarter.
4th Quarter:
• The Friars continued their strong play on both ends of the court in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks, 16-13.
• Olivia Olsen scored four of her game-high 12 points in the fourth
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Senior Mary Baskerville returned to the Friar lineup after missing the last two games due to an injury. She was productive scoring 10 points in 11:27 of action.
• With the win, the Friars earned their first home win of the season.
• The Friars had their best defensive effort of the season, holding Monmouth to just 34 points and just 14 field goals (14-67 – 20.9%)
• With her 10 points today, Baskerville is just 44 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
• Freshman Olivia Olsen had a career-high 12 points and was a perfect 4-4 from the field.
• Senior Alyssa Geary finished with 11 points on 5-9 shooting from the field.
• The Friars shot 49% from the field (24-49) in the win.
• The Friars registered a 50-32 advantage on the boards in the win.
