Friars Rally From 17-Point Deficit To Defeat Maine In Overtime, 66-61

Janai Crooms records 18 points and 19 boards; Emily Archibald nets a career-high 20 points.
ORONO, MAINE – The Providence College women's basketball team went to overtime for the second-straight game to start the season and earned a 66-61 victory at Maine on Nov. 13. The Friars improved to 1-1 on the year, while the Black Bears dropped to 0-2. Providence started the game 1-13 from the field and overcame a 17-point deficit to take the win.
1st QUARTER:
• Maine got out to a 5-0 lead before Providence got on the board with a Mary Baskerville free throw at 7:39.
• The Black Bears extended their lead to 8-1.
• The Friars recorded five turnovers and started 0-7 from the field.
• After the media timeout, Alyssa Geary got Providence on the board for their first field goal at the 2:55 mark (8-3).
• Maine responded with nine-straight points to gain a 14-point edge after the opening 10 minutes of play (17-3).
• The Friars shot 1-13 from the field and committed seven turnovers in the first quarter.
2nd QUARTER:
• Providence used a 10-2 run through the first 4:19 of the second to get within nine (22-13).
• Kennebunk, Maine native Emily Archibald scored five points in the run, while Lauren Sampson added a three to force a Black Bear timeout.
• Sampson knocked down her second triple of the game to cut the deficit to six (24-18).
• Janai Crooms scored the final four points of the second quarter to get Providence within four at halftime (28-24).
• Archibald paced the Friars with seven first-half points, while Sampson chipped in six.
• Crooms scored six points and added a team-best six boards, three assists and three blocked shots in the first half.
3rd QUARTER:
• Crooms crept into double figures in scoring with her 10th point to tie the game, 30-30, with 7:38 on the clock.
• Providence took its first lead of the day on a reverse lay-in by Archibald at the 6:49 mark (32-30).
• Crooms earned her first double-double as a Friars on an offensive rebound with 5:09 to play in the third (10 points / 10 rebounds).
• At the 3:36 mark, it was Archibald from deep with her first three of the game to give Providence a 37-36 edge and force a Maine timeout.
• Out of the break, Maine scored five-straight points to regain the lead (41-37).
• The Black Bears maintained the lead through the remainder of the quarter and took a 44-42 advantage into the finals 10 minutes of regulation.
4th QUARTER:
• An 8-0 run gave the Black Bears a 54-48 lead, forcing a Providence timeout with 5:45 remaining.
• Maine went scoreless over the next 2:31, while the Friars cut the deficit to 54-51.
• Mary Baskerville converted a traditional three-point play with 1:13 remaining to tie the game, 56-56.
• The Friars forced a shot-clock violation with 27-seconds remaining in regulation.
• Archibald had an open look at a baseline three to win the game, but was off target and the two teams went to overtime.
OVERTIME:
• Providence opened the scoring in the OT session as Crooms converted on a strong drive to the hoop.
• Baskerville made it a 59-56 lead after hitting one of two free throws.
• Maine got on the board in the extra session with 3:28 to play on a pair of foul shots by Alba Orois.
• Geary and Archibald responded for the Friars with back-to-back buckets to take a 63-58 lead.
• Maine cut the lead to 63-60 with another pair of foul shots and the Friars turned the ball over on their next possession.
• Archibald got the ball right back for Providence as she caused a jump ball with 57-seconds to play, but the Friars could not put the game away as they committed their 22nd turnover of the game.
• Maine made one of two free throws on their next offensive possession to make it a 63-61 game.
• Providence closed out the game with a 3-4 performance at the line to earn the 66-61 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Crooms played 43 minutes and put up her first double-double with the Friars and third of her career with 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.
• Nine of Crooms' 19 boards came off the offensive glass. Her 19 boards also were three shy of Britt King's '86 single-game record (22).
• She also added five assists, four blocked shots and two steals.
• Archibald scored in double figures for the second-straight game, locking in a career-high 20 points on 8-14 shooting from the field. She added six boards and two steals.
• Geary responded well after a disappointing season opener with 15 points on 7-14 shooting, three rebounds and three assists.
• Each of the Friars' two games to start the season have been decided in overtime.
• Ann Simon recorded 24 points and 11 rebounds for Maine, while Orois chipped in 13 points.
• Providence held a 47-41 advantage on the boards.
• The Friars shot 42.9-percent (27-63), despite their slow start from the field in the first quarter (1-13).
• Providence dominated the game inside the paint, outscoring the Black Bears 46-24.

• Providence returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 17 against intra-state rival Rhode Island. The game will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
