Women’s Soccer Welcomes Marquette For BIG EAST Match-Up

Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Providence, R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will host the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars are coming off a 1-0 double overtime win against Villanova on Thursday, Oct. 7 in Villanova, Pa. Providence now has an overall record of 7-3-2, including a 2-1-1 mark in BIG EAST play.

Friars Defeat The Wildcats In Double Overtime... On Thursday, Oct. 7, Providence beat Villanova, 1-0, in double overtime. Sophomore Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) scored the game winner from the top of the box in the 107th minute off a pass from fifth-year Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.).  Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) earned her first shutout on the road, giving her a total of four shutouts this season.
 
Highlighting Hughes... Meg Hughes currently ranks 22nd among the program's all-time scorers with 31 points. Hughes has scored 11 goals and has added nine assists through 24 games played in a Friar uniform. She leads Providence this season with 17 points on seven goals and three assists.
 
Hughes ranks in the top-10 in six different statistical categories in the BIG EAST. Hughes ranks fourth in goals (7) and goals per game (0.58), fifth in points (17) and points per game (1.42). She also ranks second in shots (46) and shots per game (3.83).
 
Kenney Named To The BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll... Freshman Gillian Kenney was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Oct. 4. The freshman scored the game-tying goal against No. 23 Georgetown in a 1-1 double overtime result on Sunday, Oct. 3.
 
Kenney is now the second leading scorer for Providence this season with 11 points on four goals and three assists. She ranks in the top-10 in three different statistical categories in the BIG EAST. Kenney ranks ninth in total points (11) and tenth in points per game (0.92). She also is tied for fifth in goals (4).
 
Series History Against Marquette... Marquette holds a 3-12-2 all-time advantage over Providence. The Friars have won the last three meetings against the Golden Eagles. In their last meeting on Oct. 3, 2019, Providence won 2-1 in overtime.
 
Scouting The Golden Eagles...  Marquette enters the match with a 7-5-0 overall record, including a 3-2-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 3-0 loss against UConn on Thursday, Oct. 7.
 
Marquette was picked to finish eighth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Redshirt junior Rachel Johnson leads the Golden Eagles on offense this season with 11 points on three goals and two assists. Redshirt freshman Mikki Easter backs Marquette in goal with 0.814 save percentage and has only allowed eight goals in 11 games.
 
Friars Picked Fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, August 12. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Butler and UConn.
 
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four). At the conclusion of the season, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
 
Up Next… The Friars will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to face Butler University on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
