NEW BRITAIN, CONN. -The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams both competed at the CCSU Mini Meet Friday, Oct. 23. The Friars, though holding out their top six runners, placed third as a team on the men's side with a first place finish from
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) and sixth as a team on the women's end.
For the men's 5km race, Freshman
Abdel Laadjel led the Friar men with a first-place finish in 14:41.1, finishing 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Laadjel's time was just five seconds off from the course's record and was the fastest all-time for a Providence College athlete at the Stanley Park Course.
Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) tabbed a sixth-place finish in a time pf 15:07.8.
Sean Meehan (East Greenwich, R.I.) and
Matthew Lepine (Red Bank, N.J.) also had top 20 finishes, coming in at 15
th (15:16.3) and 19
th (15:22.3) place, respectively.
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) rounded out the top finishers for the Friars, placing 27
th in 15:29.6. The men were racing in a field of 92 runners.
For the women's 3km race, the Friars were led by junior
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) who finished 13
th in a time of 9:55.7.
Ashley Foley (Beverly, Mass.) finished 18
th (10:06.5) while
Holly Brennan (Bettystown, Ireland)
Claire Kelly (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) and
Olivia Belt (Cumberland, R.I.) finished in 24
th (10:18.5) 37
th (10:31.6) and 57
th (10:49.2), respectively. The women competed in a field of 89 runners.
The Friars will be back in action on Friday, October 29
th for the BIG EAST Championships in Carmel, Ind.
