PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Â The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams travel to Carmel, Ind. for the BIG EAST Championships on Friday, Oct. 29. The men's 8k race will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET and the women's 6k at 11:50 a.m. ET.

Leading the men will be
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.). Rocha is coming off a 10
th place finish (23:36.9) at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Rocha earned BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week after his collegiate victory at the 2021 Friar Cross Country Invitational (24:29.7) and then again for his success at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown with a seventh-place finish (24:14.6). The Friar men have won 15 BIG EAST Championships dating back to 1979. Their most recent championship came in 2006. For individual titles, the Friar men have captured 11. The most recent individual winner was Lee Carey in 2010.

Leading the pack for the Friar women will be
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.). Coffin most recently led the Friars at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, placing 22
nd in a time of 20:33, in a field with 19 nationally ranked teams. Coffin placed 15
th at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown (17:31.5) and came in at 5th at the 2021 Friar Cross Country Invitational (18:12.3) In previous years at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, Coffin tabbed a fourth-place finish in the 2020 (20:44.2) as well as a fourth-place finish in 2019 (21:56.5). Since 1982, the women have won eight BIG EAST Championships. Their most recent championship came in 2016. For individual titles, the Friar women have won ten. Following the BIG EAST Championships, both teams will head to Boston, Mass. on Nov. 12 for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
