No. 16 Men's Soccer Defeats UConn, 2-1

Kevin Vang scored the game winner with 3:41 left in regulation.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –The 16th-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the University of Connecticut Huskies, 2-1, on Saturday, October 23 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.  Junior Luis Garcia (Gran Canaria, Spain) opened the scoring when he blasted a shot from outside the box on the left side that deflected off the cross bar and then off the back of the goalie at 55:26.  UConn evened the game at 1-1 when Okem Chime converted on a side volley from in front of the net at 68:53.  With 3:41 remaining in the game, Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) redirected a pass into the lower left side of the net to give the Friars their ninth win of the season.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
  • After 45 minutes of action, score was tied at 0-0.
  • The Friars outshot the Huskies, 8-3, in the first half.
  • Luis Garcia scored the first goal of the game at 55:26 when he rifled a shot off the cross bar that then deflected off the back of the goalie.  Paulo Lima and Simon Triantafilou assisted on the goal.
  • Gage Raftery had a great opportunity to put the Friars up 2-0 when he was alone in front of the net but the UConn goalie Jahmali Waite made a diving save.
  • The Huskies got on the scoreboard at 68:53 when Okem Chime scored in front of the net with a side volley. 
  • Raftery again had a chance to put the Friars ahead when he was alone in front of the UConn net but his shot hit the left post.
  • Vang's goal was the team's 24th second half goal of the season, while the squad has scored eight goals in the first half this season.

 (1-0)– Providence – 55:26/2nd- Luis Garcia blasted a shot from the top of the left side of the box that deflected down off the cross bar, hit the back of the goalie and went in the net.  Paulo Lima and Simon Triantfillou assisted on the goal
(1-1)-UConn – 68:53/2nd- Okem Chime scored on a side volley from 15 yards in front of the net.  Bjorn Nikolajewski and Ben Awashie assisted on the goal.
(2-1)-Providence – 86:19/2ndKevin Vang redirected a pass from Brendan McSorley into the far left corner of the net.
