Women's Basketball Falls To No. 3 UConn, 87-50

STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 3/5 Connecticut, 87-50, on Saturday, Jan. 9 in Storrs, Conn. The Friars dropped to 5-7 overall (3-4 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 7-0 (6-0 BIG EAST). 
 
FIRST QUARTER:  
• The Friars were the first to get on the board at 7:29 as Connecticut product Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) knocked down a short turnaround jumper on the left block.  
• UConn missed its first three shot attempts and didn't get on the scoreboard until Olivia Nelson-Ododa converted one of two free throws at the 6:04 mark (4-1).  
• Providence mounted a 7-1 lead before the Huskies hit their first field goal of the day (4:55).  
• UConn went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game (13-12) with 2:18 left in the quarter.  
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) halted the run with a lay-in with 1:50 on the clock (14-13).  
• The Huskies held a 19-18 lead after 10 minutes of play.  
• The Friars shot 62-percent (8-13), including 2-5 from three-point land (40-percent).   
• UConn converted 54-percent of its attempts from the field (7-13), including 2-4 from three (50-percent).  
  
SECOND QUARTER:  
• The Huskies held a 28-22 lead at the media timeout after outscoring Providence, 9-4, through the first 5:14 of the quarter.  
• The Friars, who played much of the first quarter without Baskerville due to foul trouble, picked up her third personal with 4:38 remaining in the frame.  
• The Huskies used a 7-0 run to gain a 35-22 lead before Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) drilled a three for Providence at 3:33.   
• The Friars trailed 46-29 at the half.  
• Spiwak hit 4-5 field goals for a team-best eight points.  
• Paige Bueckers paced Connecticut with 14 points and five assists.  
 
THIRD QUARTER
• Baskerville established herself early in the third, scoring both of the Friars first two buckets (46-33). 
• The Huskies answered with an 12-0 run, while Providence went scoreless from the field for just over 4:00 minutes of action. 
• Geary got a bucket downlow at the 4:47 mark to halt the Friars' drought (58-35). 
• The Huskies went on a 12-0 run to finish the quarter, which ballooned a 60-37 lead into a 72-37 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. 
• Geary scored five of the Friars' eight points in the third on 2-2 shooting from the field. 
 
FOURTH QUARTER
• Freshman Julia Fabozzi (Staten Island, N.Y.) halted an 8-0 run by the Huskies with a three-point bucket from the left wing with 5:21 remaining to make the score 82-42. 
• Fabozzi's bucket started a 7-0 run for Providence to get within 82-46.  
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS
• Saturday's game marked the first meeting between Providence and Connecticut since Feb. 12, 2013. 
• The Huskies improved to 41-21 all-time vs. the Friars. 
• Spiwak finished with 10 points on the day. She is the only Friar to score in double figures during each BIG EAST game this season. 
• Geary also tallied double figures with 10 points on 4-8 shooting and added five rebounds and two assists. 
• Bueckers paced the Huskies with 23 points on 8-10 shooting and added five assists, three steals and two blocked shots. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT
• The Friars are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 against Villanova. The game will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. The BIG EAST Digital Network will broadcast the game live via the FloHoops platform.
