Craig Stewart announced the program's team captains and incoming players for the 2021 spring season on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Senior
Malcolm Duncan (Toronto, Ontario) and junior
Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) have been named captains.
Samuel Biven (Atlanta, Georgia),
Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.),
Gevork Diarbian (Cranston, R.I.),
Ryan Gallagher (Safety Harbor, Fla.),
Brendan McSorley (Randolph, N.J.),
Aidan Melville (Cumberland Foreside, Maine),
Jason Pereira (Bloomfield, N.J.) and
Armaan Wilson (Kleinburg, Ontario) make up the group of incoming freshmen.
Luis Garcia (Gran Canaria, Spain),
Jonny Nixon (Cheshire, England),
Adam Riis (Hellerup, Denmark) are incoming transfers.
Captains
Duncan has started 52 of 56 games he has played for the Friars in the last three seasons. The senior has registered three points on three assists. The defender helped the squad compile 11 shutouts during the 2019 season.
Lima started every game for the Friars in the 2019 season. He scored a career-high of 18 points as a sophomore. The midfielder led the team in goals (eight) on 37 shots and registered two assists. Lima was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, All-BIG EAST Second Team and United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team.
Newcomers
Biven joins the Friars after graduating from North Atlanta High School. The 6-2, 165-pound midfielder played for the United Futbol Academy where he led his team to Southeast US Development Academy Champions in 2018-19.
Burns attended YSC Academy and played for Philadelphia Union Academy for four years and trained with Philadelphia Union 2 for two years. The 6-4, 180-pound goalkeeper started for Philadelphia Union 2 in three preseason games and traveled with them, winning both the EDP Cup and Rider Cup in 2014 and 2015.
Diarbian, a 5-7, 145 pound forward, attended La Salle Academy in Providence, R.I., where he helped his squad claim Rhode Island Division I State Championship in 2017. The Cranston native played academy soccer for the New England Revolution.
Gallagher graduated from Jesuit High School Tampa and played for the Chargers Soccer Club from 2011-2020 and Chargers Development Academy 2016-2020. The 6-1, 175-pound goalkeeper, qualified for the playoffs every year while playing with the Development Academy and was named TopDrawerSoccer DA Boys Standout of the Week twice.
Garcia, a 5-7, 150-pound midfielder, attended Brighton UK and played academy soccer for Sevilla FC and Las Palmas Academy for two years. He participated in the Champions League Youth Cup for Sevilla FC and played in the FA Youth Cup for Brighton & Hove Albion FC.
McSorley attended Delbarton School, where he recorded 54 goals and tallied 33 assists in his four seasons. He led his team to three County Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The 6-0, 153-pound forward also competed for the Players Development Academy and was named an All-American as a senior.
Melville, a 5-11, 145-pound midfielder, graduated from Greely High School, where he was the a three-time Maine State Cup Champion. He scored 19 goals and added six assists during his senior campaign. He also played for the New England Revolution and DC United.
Nixon, a 6-3, 175-pound forward, attended Abbey Gate College where he scored 31 goals in two years. He also played academy soccer for Port Vale FC and Chester FC. He traveled to Belgium for an International tournament with Port Vale FC.
Pereira, 6-0, 180-pound defender, attended Seton Hall Prep. In 2019, he helped his team set the school record for shutouts, with 20. He was named a United Soccer Coaches All-American and earned NJ.com Player of the Year and Defender of the Year. He also competed for the Players Development Academy (PDA).
Riis attended Rysensteen Gymnasium, where he played 17 games and scored one goal in his senior season. The 6-0, 165-pound defender received an academic scholarship to Copenhagen International School.
Wilson, a 6-2, 180-pound midfielder graduated from Emily Carr Secondary School. He played academy soccer for Woodbridge FP 2002 for four years. In 2019, he was an Ontario Cup Champion, during which he scored two goals and was named Most Valuable Player.
