Strong Second Half Propels Villanova To 74-63 Win Over Friars

Providence will head to Chicago to compete in the 2020 BIG EAST Tournament on March 6-9.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Villanova, 74-63, in its regular-season finale on March 1 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, but the Wildcats outscored Providence 50-26 in the second half to earn the win. The game served as the back-drop for the program's annual senior day, and honored Ny-Asia Franklin (East Orange, N.J.) prior to tip-off. 
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Friars used a 14-3 run during a span of 4:38 to force a Villanova timeout. The run provided a 14-5 lead with 4:11 left in the quarter.
• Providence took a 19-10 lead into the break after shooting 40-percent from the field (6-15), including 60-percent from three (3-5).
• Villanova shot just 20-percent in the opening 10 minutes of play (4-20), including 2-11 from beyond the arc (18-percent).
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) and Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) combined to score 11 of the Friars' 19 points.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• Villanova started the second quarter with five-straight points to get within four (19-15), but Webb got the Friars back on the board with her third three of the game at the 7:47 mark to put Providence ahead 22-15.
• The Friars held Villanova scoreless for over four minutes while mounting a 35-21 lead with 2:17 to play.
• Providence held a 37-24 advantage on the scoreboard at halftime.
• The Friars shot 50-percent from the field in the first half (14-28), including 71.4-percent from three-point territory (5-7).
• Webb led all scorers through 20 minutes of action with nine points on 3-5 shooting, including a 3-4 performance from beyond the arc.
• Mary Gedaka paced Villanova with seven points and eight boards.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Villanova used a 16-2 scoring run to tie the game, 40-40, with 4:41 left in the third. During the Wildcat's run, Providence was scoreless for 3:28 and turned the ball over three times.
• The Wildcats took their first lead since the opening bucket of the game on a jumper by Bridget Herlihy with 3:20 on the clock.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) was responsible for tying the game on two occasions at 42-42 and 44-44. Her first bucket came on a put back and her second came on a drive to the hoop on the left side.
• The Wildcats outscore the Friars 20-7 in the third.
• The two teams remained tied, 44-44, heading into the fourth quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• 'Nova opened the final frame with a three-pointer, but Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) scored four-straight points to give Providence a 48-47 edge.
• The Wildcats hit six of their next seven baskets to mount a 67-55 lead with 2:27 left in regulation.
• Williams converted a traditional three-point play with just under two minutes left on the clock to get the Friars within single-digits (67-58).
• The Wildcats held on for a 74-63 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Franklin got the start on senior day for her final game at Alumni Hall and recorded two points, five rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.
• Williams paced the Friars with 14 points, all of which came during the fourth quarter. She shot 4-5 from the field on the day and 6-7 from the free-throw line.
• Webb tallied 12 points, two rebounds and one assist.
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) contributed eight points and a team-best eight rebounds and added two blocked shots.
• With two blocks in the game vs. Villanova, Baskerville becomes the first player in program history to record 50+ blocked shots in back-to-back seasons.
• Providence honored Villanova Head Coach Harry Perretta prior to the game. Perretta has patrolled the sidelines at 'Nova for 42 seasons and announced his retirement from coaching at the beginning of the year. He has 782 coaching victories at Villanova and picked up his 50th win all-time at Alumni Hall on Sunday vs. the Friars. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will head to Chicago, Ill. to compete in the 2020 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament held at Wintrust Arena on March 6-9. Providence will begin play in the First Round on March 6. The BIG EAST will release an official bracket with seeds and match-ups at the conclusion of regular-season play later this afternoon.
