Women's Hockey Set For Home-And-Home Series Against No. 3 Northeastern

Puck Drop 
Providence will wrap up its season series with Northeastern on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 in a home-and-home series. The Friars will travel to Boston, Mass. for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop on Friday, followed by a 3:00 p.m. start on Saturday at Schneider Arena.

Earlier This Season Against Northeastern
The Friars handed Northeastern one of only two Hockey East losses this season back on Oct. 25. Providence earned a 1-0 shutout victory and is the only team to keep Northeastern off the scoreboard this season. Hayley Lunny's goal at 3:18 of the second period was the eventual game winner. Clare Minnerath made 33 saves in the shutout, while Aerin Frankel posted 19 at the other end.

Fight For Home Ice
Providence has clinched a spot in the Hockey East Tournament for the second-consecutive season under Head Coach Matt Kelly. The Friars are tied with UConn for fourth place in Hockey East with 26 points. Providence will wrap up the season with home-and-home series against Northeastern and Holy Cross while the UConn Huskies will cap off their regular season campaign with a two-game home series versus Merrimack followed by a pair of games at Boston University.

Providence vs. Ranked Opponents
Providence currently holds a 2-3 record against ranked opponents this season including a 2-1 record at Schneider Arena. The team's most recent matchups came against No. 8 Boston Univeristy in a home-and-home series, Providence split the series on Jan. 10 and Jan. 11.

Dove And Hjalmarsson Leading The Way
Sophomore Sara Hjalmarsson leads the offensive charge, recording a team-high 16 goals alongside nine assists for 25 points. She ranks tied for fifth in the Hockey East in goals (16).

Captain Whitney Dove ranks second on the team in points (23), with seven goals and a team-high 16 assists.

Abstreiter Earns Defensive Player Of The Week Honors
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) stopped 64 of 66 shots, earning her the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors. She posted a .970 save percentage, including a 1.00 goals against average in two games against New Hampshire. Abstreiter recorded a career-high 32 saves on Friday, Jan. 17 before matching the feat the following day with another 32 saves.

Abstreiter took over in net on Jan. 4 against Vermont and has started every game since between the pipes. She holds a 4-1 record over her last five starts and has allowed just one goal in four of the last five matchups.

Providence In The Polls
February 3 marked the fifth time this season that Providence has received votes in the USCHO Women's Poll. The Friars received one vote after receiving two votes the week prior.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 15-11-4 overall and 12-9-2 in Hockey East play. The Friars' defense leads the way, allowing just 717 shots on the season, tops in the Hockey East. Providence ranks ninth in the nation in scoring defense (2.00 GA/GP).

Hjalmarsson leads the Friars in points with 25 on 16 goals and nine assists. Dove holds a team-high 16 assists while adding seven goals. Hayley Lunny and Lauren DeBlois are tied for third on the team in points with 18.

Sandra Abstreiter took over in net for Clare Minnerath on Jan. 4. She has started the past twelve matchups since taking over the starting role. She has posted a 1.65 goals against average and .934 save percentage for a 7-6-2 overall record.

Four-Game Win Streak
The Friars held a season long winning streak of four games spanning from Nov. 17 to Nov. 30. Providence won 3-2 on home ice to begin the winning streak before defeating Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23.

Providence then defeated Brown in the 25th annual Mayor's Cup, 10-0. The ten goals marked the most goals scored by a team in the Mayor's Cup history and first time the Friars have scored ten goals since Feb. 4, 2007, when they defeated Vermont, 10-1.

Hjalmarsson's Career Day
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) posted a career day against the Brown Bears, scoring three goals to go along with three assists. Her six points are the most by a player in the 25 years of the Mayor's Cup, and the most points scored by a women's player in a game this season in the NCAA.

She was named the Hockey East Player of the Week for her efforts. Hjalmarsson trails Dove for the team lead in points with 19 compared to Dove's 20.

Spreading The Wealth
Seventeen Friars have tallied a point this season with 16 players recording a goal. Ten players have reached double digits in Hjalmarsson (25), Dove (23), Lunny (18), DeBlois (18), Rickard (15), Fransoo (14), Burton (12), Murphy (11), Rice (10), Van Pelt (10).

Minnerath Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors
Minnerath was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28. It marked her first league honor as a Friar. The senior netminder made a career-high 33 saves en route to her first shutout of the season against No. 3 Northeastern (Oct. 25). She posted a 1-1-0 that last week and made a total of 53 saves in two starts.

Burton Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Burton scored a goal in each of her first two collegiate games, including the game winner against Quinnipiac (Oct. 5). For her efforts, she was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Oct. 7. Burton's two goals came on just two total shots over that weekend.

Hockey East Preseason Poll 
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Thursday, Sept. 26. Providence received 56 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (81), Boston University (71) and Boston College (65).

Rounding out the poll were New Hampshire (42), UConn (41), Merrimack (30), Maine (29), Vermont (25), and Holy Cross (nine).

Hjalmarsson with Team Sweden
During the off-season, Sara Hjalmarsson had several chances to compete for Team Sweden. She was named to Sweden's National Team roster for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. She played four games for Team Sweden without tallying a point.

Scouting the Huskies
No. 3 Northeastern is currently 25-3-2 overall and 21-2-0 in Hockey East. The Huskies captured the regular season crown on Jan. 31 and are currently 11 points ahead of second-place Boston University. On Tuesday night (Feb. 11), the Huskies captured the Beanpot with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over the Terriers. The game officially counted as a tie and extended Northeastern's unbeaten streak to 11 games. The Huskies have not lost since Jan. 5 against then-No. 1 Wisconsin (4-3, OT).

As a team, Northeastern averages 3.93 goals per game and just 1.00 goals against per game. The Huskies rank third nationally in scoring offense, second nationally in scoring defense and are also second in penalty kill percentage (93.1%). They have killed 94-of-101 power plays and have a nation-leading six shorthanded goals.

Who to Watch
Sophomore Alina Mueller leads Northeastern in goals (20), assists (34) and points (54). She is tied for third nationally in points per game (1.80). Classmate Chloe Aurard, who was just named Beanpot MVP, has 42 points on 20 goals and 22 assists. Junior Skylar Fontaine has also eclipsed 30 points, as she has 13 goals and 17 assists. Mia Brown and Katy Knoll are the Huskies' other high scorers, each with 21 points.

Junior Aerin Frankel has been stellar in net, posting a 21-3-2 record in 26 games played. She ranks second nationally in save percentage (.957) and goals against average (1.13). The reigning Hockey East goaltender of the Month also boasts eight shutouts on the year.
