Women's Hoops Defeats St. John's In BIG EAST Play, 76-53

Chanell Williams paced four Friars in double figures with season-high 20 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College women's basketball team earned its second BIG EAST victory of the season with a 76-53 win over St. John's on Dec. 19. Providence led for 36:09 of the game. Four Friars scored double digits, led by Chanell Williams' (Bronx, N.Y.) season-high 20 points. The Friars improved to 4-4 overall, and more importantly 2-1 in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm dropped to 2-5 overall (0-3 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST QUARTER:
  • Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) accounted for the first two Friar buckets, both of which came from the right block.
  • St. John's responded with an 8-3 run going into the media timeout to make the score 8-7.
  • Providence climbed back to take the lead, 13-10, to end the quarter.
  • Five different Friars entered the scoring column, with Baskerville leading the way with four points and three rebounds.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
  • With the game tied, 17-17, at the 6:50 mark of the second frame, Providence went on a 13-0 run to create distance.
  • Providence outscored St. John's 21-14 in the quarter to take a 10-point lead into the break (34-24).
  • Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Williams registered five points each in the quarter.
  • Providence shot 53.3-percent (8-15) from the field in the second quarter and 60-percent (3-5) from deep.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
  • The Friars began the quarter on an 8-2 run with a layup from Baskerville and a pair of three-pointers from Geary and Williams.
  • Providence's lead grew to 18 (48-30) after a steal and finish by Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.).
  • At the end of three quarters, Providence led 56-38. The Friars had three players in double figures. Williams paced Providence with a game-high 17, Baskerville had 12 points and Geary chipped in with 10.
  • Providence shot 47.4-percent (9-19) from the field and 50-percent (3-6) from deep in the quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Geary pitched in with four of the Friars' first eight points of the quarter to push Providence's lead to 22 (64-42) entering the media timeout.
  • Providence's 10-0 run midway through the final frame gave the Friars their largest lead of the game, 29 (76-47).
  • Spiwak led all players with seven points in the fourth quarter.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Williams paced the Friars with a game and season-high 20 points. It marked Williams' 28th double-digit scoring game and third 20-point game of her career.
  • Baskerville secured the 14th double-double of her career, with 14 points on 7-14 shooting and a season-high 13 rebounds. It marked Baskerville's 40th career game with double-digit points and 19th double-digit rebounding game.
  • Geary finished with 14 points on 6-12 shooting. It marked her 15th double-digit scoring game of her career.
  • Spiwak finished with 12 points on 4-8 shooting from the field.
  • Providence forced 20 turnovers and cashed in on the offensive end for 24 points. The Friars outscored the Red Storm 24-7 in points off turnovers.
  • Providence shot 46.2-percent (30-65) from the field, 47.1-percent (8-17) from deep and 66.7-percent (8-12) from the line.
  • Providence matched their season-high in points (76). The Friars also recorded 76 points n a road victory over Rhode Island, 76-50.
  • The Friars have won five of the last seven meeting against the Red Storm.
 
UP NEXT:
The Friars return to action on Thursday, Dec. 31 against the Xavier Musketeers in Cincinnati, Ohio. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Cintas Center.
