Kyra Spiwak netted a game-high 19 points for Providence.
CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Xavier, 64-50, on Dec. 31 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
FIRST QUARTER:
• Xavier went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead midway through the first quarter.
• Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) halted the run with her second three-pointer of the game, bringing Providence within one (8-7) at the media timeout (3:42).
• The Musketeers took a 12-11 lead at the end of the quarter.
• Spiwak recorded seven of the Friars' 11 points in the frame.
SECOND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the quarter with a 6-0 spurt to take a 17-12 lead.
• Providence was scoreless over the next 4:05 and committed four turnovers during that span, but still managed to take a 17-16 lead into the media timeout (4:38).
• Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) nailed a three out of the break to get the Friars back on the board for a 20-16 advantage at the 4:01 mark.
• Xavier took a 24-22 lead with 1:24 remaining in the first half with a 6-0 run.
• The teams traded baskets during the closing stretch, capped by a three-point bucket from Spiwak with seven seconds left to give PC a 27-26 lead.
• Xavier's Aaliyah Dunham converted a pair of free throws with no time remaining on the clock after drawing a late foul on a tough drive to the hoop.
• The Musketeers took a 28-27 lead into halftime.
• Spiwak led all scorers with 14 points on 5-8 shooting from the field, including 3-5 from three-point land.
• Williams chipped in five points and four assists in the opening 20 minutes of action.
• Sarah Leyendecker led Xavier with eight points.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Xavier used an 8-0 run to mount a 38-30 lead before Spiwak knocked down her fourth triple of the game at 7:07 (38-33).
• The Musketeers went cold from the field, while the Friars got back-to-back buckets from Andrea Cooper and Alyssa Geary, to get Providence within 41-37 at the 3:55 mark.
• Xavier was scoreless the final 5:53 of the third quarter as the Friars crept within two at the break (41-39).
• Providence closed the quarter on a 6-0 run.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Williams opened the quarter with a steal and coast-to-coast lay-up to tie the game, 41-41.
• Xavier answered with an 8-0 run, fueled by the first two three-point buckets of the game by the Musketeers. Heading into the final quarter, Xavier was 0-10 from beyond the arc, but hit its first two attempts of the final frame.
• Xavier extended its run to 13-0 to gain a 54-41 advantage.
• Geary halted the run with a hook shot in the lane at 6:04 (54-43).
• Xavier maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way en route to a 64-50 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Three Friars reached double figures in the loss.
• Spiwak finished with a game-high 19 points on 6-12 shooting (4-8 from three).
• Williams added 12 points, four rebounds and five assists.
• Geary contributed 11 points, six boards, two blocked shots and two assists.
• Olivia Orlando led the Friars on the glass with nine rebounds.
