Women's Basketball Falls To Seton Hall, 77-71

Mary Baskerville recorded a double-double on 24 points and 10 rebounds.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. . – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to the Seton Hall Pirates, 77-71, on Sunday, Jan. 3 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars fall to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST play. The Pirates earned their first BIG EAST victory of the season, improving to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST. Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) led all players with 24 points on 9-17 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
  • The Friars found success down low in the opening frame, with their first three buckets coming from inside the paint.
  • Providence led after the first 10 minutes of action, 20-18.
  • Providence shot 9-12 (75-percent) from the field and 2-3 (66.7-percent) from deep.
  • Seton Hall shot 57.1-percent (8-14) from the field and 28.6-percent (2-7) from three-point land.
  • Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) came out firing in the first with 12 points to lead all scorers. Geary shot 5-6 from the field and 2-2 from deep.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
  • Providence opened up the quarter with a 9-0 run, scoring four-straight baskets from three different Friars, opening up a 29-18 lead for Providence.
  • Seton Hall clawed back with a 6-0 run to bring it within four (31-27), as it held Providence scoreless for over two minutes. 
  • The Friars gained a nine-point lead at the break (41-32). Seton Hall was held scoreless for over four minutes in the last half of the quarter.
  • Baskerville erupted in the second quarter with 12 points, and led all scorers at the half with 16 points on 7-11 shooting. She also added five rebounds.
  • Providence shot 9-17 (52.9-percent) from the field in the quarter. Seton Hall struggled in the second quarter, shooting 27.8-percent (5-18) from the field and 12.5-percent (1-8) from deep.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
  • Seton Hall came out of the half with a 7-2 run to bring the game within striking distance (43-39).
  • The Pirates claimed the lead after Lauren Park-Lane hit a three from the left wing (49-47). This was in the middle of a 10-0 run for Seton Hall. The run extended to 16-0, giving Seton Hall a six-point advantage. 
  • Baskerville broke the nearly five-minute scoring drought for the Friars with a pair of free throws.
  • The Pirates outscored the Friars 21-8 in the quarter, giving them a 53-49 lead after 30 minutes of action.
  • After a terrific first half of shooting, the Friars shot 3-12 (25-percent) from the field and 0-2 from three in the quarter. 
  • Providence turned the ball over seven times in the quarter, resulting in nine Seton Hall points.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
  • The Pirates opened the quarter on a 7-2 run, giving Seton Hall a nine-point lead (60-51). 
  • Seton Hall got its first double-digit lead of the game with 6:03 remaining after a Mya Bembry layup.
  • Spiwak's three free throws with 31.3 remaining cut Seton Hall's lead to just three (71-68).
  • The Pirates held off the Friars and went on to win, 77-71. Seton Hall outscored Providence 24-22 in the final frame.
 
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Baskerville led all scorers with 24 points on 9-17 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds. It marked Baskerville's 41st double-digit scoring game and sixth 20+ point game. Baskerville owns 20 double-digit rebounding games and 15 double-doubles in her career.
  • Spiwak chipped in with 14 points on 4-10 shooting. She is the only Friar to reach double figures in the scoring column during each BIG EAST game this season.
  • Geary finished with 12 points on 5-9 shooting. 
  • Williams registered 11 points on 5-11 shooting from the field.
