Women's Basketball Falls To Quinnipiac In Season Opener, 71-65

Friars return to action with back-to-back games against URI and Bryant this weekend.
HAMDEN, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter and rallied to take the lead late in the fourth before falling to Quinnipiac, 71-65, in the 2020-21 season opener on Nov. 25. Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) paced the Friars with a career-high 17 points, while Rose Caverly added a game-high 20 points for Quinnipiac, including six-straight from the foul line in the final 1:41 of play.
FIRST QUARTER:
• A 6-0 run gave the Friars a 12-8 advantage with 2:33 left on the clock.
• The two teams were deadlocked at 15-15 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
• The Friars scored their first points of the 2020-21 season with 6:25 remaining on the clock as senior guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Quinnipiac used a 16-4 scoring advantage in the final 5:05 of the second quarter to take a 40-27 lead at halftime.
• Geary led the Friars in the first half with nine points and three blocked shots in 19 minutes of action.
• Senior Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) and junior Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) paced the Friars on the boards with five rebounds each.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Providence out-scored Quinnipiac 23-15 in the third quarter to get within five (55-50).
• Senior Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored eight points in the frame, including five-straight points in the opening minute of action.
• The Friars got within two (50-48) with 2:29 showing on the clock, but Quinnipiac gained some separation with a 5-2 scoring margin heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Baskerville capped a 6-0 Providence run and gave the Friars their first lead since the 1:40 mark of the first quarter (63-62) with 2:32 remaining in regulation.
• Williams hit a jumper with 1:55 to play to tie the score, 65-65.
• Quinnipiac closed the game out on a 6-0 run, hitting 6-6 opportunities at the free throw line to claim a 71-65 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary led the Friars with a career-high 17 points and four assists. She also contributed five rebounds and three blocked shots.
• Baskerville just missed out on a double-double, finishing the game with 15 points, a team-high nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot.
• Baskerville played just 16 minutes in the game due to foul trouble.
• Spiwak rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points. Ten of her 14 points came in the second half, including eight in the third quarter.
• Orlando returned to the court for the first time since Jan. 17, 2020 when she sustained a season-ending injury against St. John's last season.
• Orlando finished the day with five points, two steals and a team-high nine rebounds.
• Providence shot 42.9-percent from the field (24-56), 20-percent from three (2-10) and 62.5-percent from the line (15-24).
• Quinnipiac shot 37.4-percent from the field (24-64), 26.1-percent from three (6-23) and 81-percent from the charity stripe (17-21).
• The Friars out-scored the Bobcats 38-31 in the second half.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will face intrastate rival Rhode Island on Saturday, Nov. 28 in Kingston, R.I. The game will be played at the Ryan Center and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
