Indoor Track Competes At Boston University Multi-Team Meet

Four women runners qualified for the ECAC Championships and five men qualified for the IC4A Championships.

BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams kicked off their 2019-20 season at the Boston University Multi-Team Meet on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Friars competed against Boston College, Harvard, University of Limerick (Ireland), UMass Lowell, Northeastern, Sacred Heart and Boston University. Providence had four women runners qualify for the ECAC Championships and the men had five runners qualify for the IC4A Championships. The IC4A/ECAC Championships will take place on Mar. 7-8 in Boston, Mass.
 
For the Friar women, Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) posted a personal-best finish (9:35.01) and took first place in the 3000-meter. In the mile run, Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Ontario) finished right behind each other in second and third place, respectively. Wheeler crossed the line in 4:47.33 and Tuck in 4:51.66. Bridget Mitchell (Milton, Mass.) finished in second (2:52.90) in the 1000-meter. All four Friars qualified for the ECAC Championships due to their performances in their respective races.
 
On the men's side, three runners took first in their respective races. Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.) took first in the 3000-meter run (8:23.85), Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) finished first in the 800-meter (1:52.20) and Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) crossed the line first in the 5000-meter (14:19.89). Right behind Rocha, Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) finished second in the 5000-meter (14:31.57). All five Friars qualified for the IC4A Championships due to their performances in their respective races.
 
The Friars men and women return to Boston, Mass. on Jan. 24-25 for the John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University.
