Women’s Hockey Earns 3-1 Victory At New Hampshire

Sara Hjalmarsson scored her team-high 12th goal of season.

DURHAM, N.H. – The Providence College women's hockey team defeated the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, 3-1, on Friday, Jan. 17 in Durham, N.H. Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) scored the game-winning goal just two minutes into the second period. Providence improves to 12-9-2 on the season with a 9-7-0 Hockey East record.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Ciara Barone (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) converted her second goal of the season to give Providence a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Barone carried the puck up the left boards before sliding a backhand towards net, the puck deflected off the keeper and into a defender's skate before going in. Annelise Rice (Excelsior, Minn.) was credited with her seventh assist of the season while Kathleen McHugh (Billerica, Mass.) earned the secondary assist for her fourth assist.
- New Hampshire found the equalizer with just 1:29 left in the opening period. The puck bounced around in front of the net before Jada Christian gathered the loose puck and slid her shot in the bottom right corner.
- The Wildcats led in shots, 9-7, at the conclusion of the first period.
- Providence carried a power play opportunity into the second period before Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) converted for her team-high 12th goal of the season. Hjalmarsson brought the puck up the middle of the ice before firing a wrist shot over the goaltender's left shoulder. Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) was credited with her 11th assist of the season.
- Through two periods of play, shots were even at 19 apiece. Providence was 1-3 on the power play compared to New Hampshire's 0-2 mark heading into the third period.
- The Friars stood strong in the final minutes after the Wildcats posted 14 shots compared to Providence's 11 in the closing period. Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) scored the empty net goal with 28 seconds remaining to seal the 3-1 victory.
- Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) earned a career-high 32 saves between the pipes for her fourth victory of the season. She has allowed just one goal in three of her last four starts.
- Providence jumps to fifth place in the Hockey East standings with the victory.
