Women's Hockey Travels To New Hampshire

Puck Drop
Providence will travel to the University of New Hampshire to face-off with the Wildcats in two road matchups on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6:00 p.m. followed by the series finale on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop.

Road Stretch
The Friars have played four of their last five games on the road and will complete the tough road stretch against New Hampshire followed by Boston College on Friday, Jan. 24.

Providence split its home-and-home series this past weekend with No. 8 Boston University. Each team came out victorious on home ice with Providence winning the opening matchup, 2-1, before falling on the road, 4-1. In Providence's 2-1 victory, Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) and Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) built a 2-0 lead before the Friars allowed a late goal. Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) recorded a career-high 29 saves to improve to 3-3-0 on the season at the time.

Providence vs. The Polls
Providence now holds a 2-3 record against ranked opponents this season including a 2-1 record at Schneider Arena.

Dove And Hjalmarsson Leading The Way
Captain Whitney Dove is leading the charge for the Friars in her senior campaign, recording six goals and a team-high 14 assists. Her 20 points are tied with teammate Sara Hjalmarsson. She ranks sixth in Hockey East in assists and is currently tied for eighth in points. Hjalmarsson ranks tied for fourth in the conference with 11 goals.

UConn Split
The Friars ended the first half of the season trading wins on opposing ice against the Connecticut Huskies on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6. Providence dropped game one in Schneider Arena, 1-0, before prevailing in overtime the following day, 2-1, in Storrs, Conn.

Providence trailed 1-0 entering the third period of game two before Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) scored her fifth goal of the season, giving her a team-high 16 points at the midway point of the 2019-20 campaign. Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) finished off the Huskies 2:11 into the overtime period with her first goal of the season.

Providence In The Polls
January 6 marked the third time this season that Providence has received votes in the USCHO Women's Poll. The Friars received four votes on January 6 with Boston University staying at their No. 8 spot.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 11-9-2 overall and 8-7-0 in Hockey East play. Providence earned a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 3 Northeastern to open league action (Oct. 25). Hayley Lunny scored the game's lone goal 3:18 into the second period and Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.) posted a career-high 33 saves to fuel the win. It marked her first shutout of the season and second of her career.

Dove and Hjalmarsson lead the Friars in points with 20 points apiece. Dove has a team-high 14 assists while adding six goals on the season. Hjalmarsson posts eleven goals accompanied by nine assists. Hayley Lunny ranks third on the team in points with 14, while freshman Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) trails Lunny with 12 points.

Katrina Broccoli (North Haven, Conn.), Minnerath and Sandra Abstreiter have all seen time in net for the Friars, with Abstreiter getting her first action against Holy Cross (Nov. 1). Minnerath has sixteen starts, a 2.21 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. Abstreiter posted her first shutout of the season against the Crusaders with 26 saves. She has seven appearances on the season with a 1.85 goals against average and .928 save percentage.

Four-Game Win Streak
The Friars held a season long winning streak of four games spanning from Nov. 17 to Nov. 30. Providence won 3-2 on home ice to begin the winning streak before defeating Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23.

Providence then defeated Brown in the 25th annual Mayor's Cup, 10-0. The ten goals marked the most goals scored by a team in the Mayor's Cup history and first time the Friars have scored ten goals since Feb. 4, 2007, when they defeated Vermont, 10-1.

Hjalmarsson's Career Day
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) posted a career day against the Brown Bears, scoring three goals to go along with three assists. Her six points are the most by a player in the 25 years of the Mayor's Cup, and the most points scored by a women's player in a game this season in the NCAA.

She was named the Hockey East Player of the Week for her efforts. Hjalmarsson trails Dove for the team lead in points with 19 compared to Dove's 20.

Spreading The Wealth
Seventeen Friars have tallied a point this season with 15 players recording a goal. Eight players have reached double digits in Dove (20), Hjalmarsson (20), Lunny (14), DeBlois (12), Murphy (11), Rickard (11), Burton (11), and Fransoo (10).

Minnerath Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors
Minnerath was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28. It marked her first league honor as a Friar. The senior netminder made a career-high 33 saves en route to her first shutout of the season against No. 3 Northeastern (Oct. 25). She posted a 1-1-0 that last week and made a total of 53 saves in two starts.

Burton Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Burton scored a goal in each of her first two collegiate games, including the game winner against Quinnipiac (Oct. 5). For her efforts, she was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Oct. 7. Burton's two goals came on just two total shots over that weekend.

Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Thursday, Sept. 26. Providence received 56 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (81), Boston University (71) and Boston College (65).

Rounding out the poll were New Hampshire (42), UConn (41), Merrimack (30), Maine (29), Vermont (25), and Holy Cross (nine).

Meet the Staff
Matt Kelly joined the Friars in 2018-19 for his inaugural season at the helm. He led the team to a 24-11-2 record, helping the Friars to tie the program-high for wins in a season. Kelly led Providence to the Hockey East Semifinals for the first time since 2013 and coached three Friars to Hockey East honors at the conclusion of the season.

Prior to Providence, Kelly served as a Head Scout for USA Hockey and the Women's National Team. His primary responsibility was to oversee and maintain the player pools for the U-18 and U-22 squads, in addition to the Women's National Team. During his time with USA Hockey, Kelly won a total of eleven gold medals. He recently captured a gold medal with the Women's National Team at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Additionally, he helped the U18 team win four-consecutive gold medals (2015-2018). This marked the first time any U18 team won four World Championships in a row.

Kelly hired Jake Anderson, Ali Domenico and Doug Ferry to round out his staff. Anderson focused mainly on the Friars' defensive unit during his first season. Providence gave up just 1.89 goals per game in 2018-19, which ranked seventh nationally. The Friars' penalty kill also ranked seventh, killing off 87.4 percent of opponents' opportunities. Domenico guided the Friars' offensive unit in her first season. Providence finished 13th nationally in goals per game, averaging 2.81 per game. The power play unit also finished 13th nationally, converting at on 19.1 percent of chances.

Hjalmarsson with Team Sweden
During the off-season, Sara Hjalmarsson had several chances to compete for Team Sweden. She was named to Sweden's National Team roster for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. She played four games for Team Sweden without tallying a point.

2018-19 Award Winners
The team had four players pick up Hockey East post-season honors. Murphy earned Second Team All-Star status for the second-consecutive season. Myers and Fransoo were named All-Star Honorable Mentions, marking each of their first-career league honors. Additionally, Sara Hjalmarsson was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Five different Friars earned Hockey East Weekly honors over the course of the season. Myers was named Defensive Player of the Week twice (Nov. 12, Mar. 4). Christina Putigna (Nov. 5), Maureen Murphy (Nov. 19) and Hayley Lunny (Nov. 26) each earned Player of the Week honors.  Sara Hjalmarsson was named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 16.

Murphy and Myers were also recognized with monthly awards from the league. Myers was Hockey East Goaltender of the Month in November and February. Murphy was Hockey East Player of the Month in November.

Scouting New Hampshire
New Hampshire posts an identical 11-9-2 overall and 8-7-1 mark in the Hockey East. The Wildcats sit one spot ahead of the Friars in the conference standings with 17 points compared to the Friars' 16 points. New Hamphsire most recently split a series with UConn at home, falling in the opening game 4-0 before defeating the Huskies 1-0 on Saturday, Jan. 11.

As a team, the Wildcats average 2.4 goals per game while giving up 2.1. The Wildcats convert on 16% of power play chances and kill off 91.9% of penalties.

Who to Watch
UNH has six players in double figures with 19 players tallying at least one point this season. Meghara McManus leads the Wildcats with 17 points on 11 goals and six assists. Tori Howran posts a team-high 11 assists.

Ava Boutilier has started a team-high 18 games in 19 appearances. She posts a 2.05 goals against average and .930 save percentage. She holds a 9-7-1 record while tallying 478 saves.
