Women’s Hockey Downed By No. 8 Boston University, 4-1

Sara Hjalmarsson scored the lone goal for the Friars in the first period for her team-leading eleventh goal of the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's hockey team fell to No. 8 Boston University, 4-1, on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Boston, Mass. The Friars tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first period before allowing three unanswered goals to close out the game. Providence now holds a 11-9-2 record and 8-7-0 mark in the Hockey East.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
-Boston University capitalized on an early turnover to take a 1-0 lead 2:53 into the game. Sammy Davis intercepted a pass at the blue line before finishing a wrister over Sandra Abstreiter's (Freising) glove side. The goal was unassisted.
- Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) deked the defender with a toe drag before firing a wrister over the goaltender's left shoulder to tie the game at 1-1, 10:46 into the opening period. Ariane Julien (Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec) played the puck up the left boards that Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) redirected to Hjalmarsson before she finished her team-leading eleventh goal of the season. Lunny was credited with her eighth assist of the season while Julien picked up her fifth assist of the 2019-20 campaign.
- Hjalmarsson is now tied for the team lead in points with Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) after recording her 20th point of the season on her goal.
- The Terriers headed to the first intermission with a 2-1 lead after Nara Elia scored with 3:11 left in the first period, she stuffed home the puck under Abstreiter on the edge of the crease.
- Providence held a 9-6 advantage in shots at the end of the first period, BU saw the only power play chance of the period but failed to convert.
- Nadia Mattivi of Boston University tallied the only mark of the second period to give the Terriers a 3-1 lead. Mattivi slid a low shot through traffic that snuck by Abstreiter 13:20 into the middle frame.
- Providence nearly brought the game within one with just over seven minutes left in the third. The Friars put five shots on net as the Terriers' goaltender stood strong. Head Coach Matt Kelly pulled Abstreiter from net with just over three minutes left but Providence failed to cut into the lead. The Terriers scored an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
- Abstreiter finished the afternoon with 19 saves. She has now started six of her eight appearances this year and holds a 3-4-0 record.
