PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Temple, 1-0, on Sept. 27 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 5-3 overall and evened their record in the conference at 1-1. Temple dropped to 4-3 on the season (0-2 BIG EAST).
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
- Both were scoreless in the first quarter, with Providence outshooting Temple 3-0.
- Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) put the Friars on the board in the second quarter as she deflected a feed from Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland).
- It marked Mendez's team-best fifth goal of the season, and the first assist of Gowing's career with the Friars.
- Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) made a diving save late in the second quarter to hold the Owls from tying the game and keep the clean sheet.
- For Rice, the 1-0 victory marked her fourth shut-out victory of the season and first in BIG EAST Conference play.
- Providence has won five-straight games against Temple, and five of the last six games overall against the Owls have been decided by one goal (including four in overtime).
