Men’s Soccer Begins BIG EAST Play Against Seton Hall

The Friars take on the Pirates this Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team will host Seton Hall University in its BIG EAST opener of the 2019 season. The game is set scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 20 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The first 50 students who come to the game will receive soccer scarfs!

Scouting the Pirates
Seton Hall recently fell to 1-3-0 on the season after a 1-0 loss on the road to Lehigh (Sept. 14). The Pirates have lost their last three games, which have all been decided by one goal. Through the first four games, 10 players have recorded points for the Pirates. Stephen Elias leads the way with six points on three goals. Vitorrio Argeri, Andrea Borg, Eden O'Leary, Cyrus Darvish and JP Martin follow with two points each. Each player has scored one goal and Martin recorded two assists. Junior Andreas Nota has started in net for the first four games. He's averaging 1.00 goals against and a .810 save percentage.  
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are coming off two wins at home improving their record to 4-2-0. On Monday Sept. 20 they had a 1-0 win over Harvard University. Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) scored the game winning goal in the 21st minute from Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) and Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.). On Saturday, Sept. 14 the Friars defeated Sacred heart, 4-0. Four different players scored for the Friars. Smith scored his second goal of the year on a header and has tallied seven points on the season. Chisholm scored the second goal of the game, giving him a total of five points. Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) scored his first career goal to put the Friars ahead, 4-0.
 
Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) has recorded two goals and two assists for six total points. Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) has registered two goals and an assist to give him five points. Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) has started all six games for the Friars and has recorded back-to-back shutouts. He has a 0.72 goals against average and a .733 save percentage.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence's roster welcomes eight newcomers to the squad for the 2019 season. Four of the nine have seen action for the Friars. Transfers, Trevor Davock and Davis Smith have both started for Friars and lead the team in points. Austin Aviza has started all six games in net and has recorded four shutouts on the season. Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) has started all six games recording three assists. Gage Raftery (Seattle, Wash) has also seen minutes for the Friars. 
 
Outshooting Opponents
Providence has outshot their opponents 111-32 in the first six games. The Friars held Harvard to just five shots and Sacred Heart to two.
 
Preseason Poll and Awards
Tiago Mendonca was voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team entering the 2019 season. In the coaches poll, the Friars were picked to finish third in the conference standings. Georgetown, the reigning tournament champion, was selected to finish first with nine first place votes (81 points). Creighton, who finished first in regular season play last season, was picked second (68 points). Providence (65 points), Marquette (59 points) and Xavier (44 points) round out the top half of the poll. Butler (40 points), St. John's (33 points), Seton Hall (28 points), DePaul (21 points) and Villanova (11 points) finish out the standings.
