Men’s Soccer Hosts Sacred Heart and Harvard

The Friars take on the Pioneers this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and the Crimson on Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team hosts Sacred Heart this Saturday, Sept. 14. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars will take on Harvard in their next match on Monday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Scouting the Pioneers
 
Sacred Heart has started the season 1-3. The Pioneers picked up their first win of the season on Sept. 11 over Saint Peter's, 2-1. Sacred Heart entered the season voted eighth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Poll by the conference's coaches. Segundo Navarro leads the team in points (four) with two goals. Jean Gabriel Pierazz has tallied two points on a goal. Riley Sullivan and Olaf Conforti both have one point from an assist. In net, Robert Strain has started every game. He holds a 2.90 goals against average and a .703 save percentage.
 
Scouting the Crimson
 
Harvard started its season on the road with a loss (6-0) against No. 20 North Carolina. On Sunday, the Rams fell to No. 5 Duke, 3-0. The Crimson will face Vermont on the road before making their way to Providence. In net, Bobby Harraka holds a 4.50 goals against average and a .654 save percentage. Harvard was selected to finish eighth in the Ivy League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
Scouting the Friars
 
The Friars are coming off a 2-1 loss at Rhode Island (Sept. 9). They defeated Albany, 1-0, in their first road game of the season on Sept. 6. Six Friars have accumulated points in the first four games. Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) is leading the pack with six points. He has accumulated two goals and two assists. Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) and Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) both have tallied four points. Serrano has scored two goals while Davis scored a goal and gathered two assists. Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) and Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.) each recorded two points from scoring a goal. Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) has recorded an assist for one point. In net, Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) has started each game. He holds a 1.03 goals against average and a .636 save percentage.
 
Outshooting Opponents
 
The Friars have outshot their opponents 60-25 in the first four games. Providence held Albany to eight shots and Rhode Island to six.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
 
Providence's roster welcomes nine newcomers to the squad for the 2019 season. Five of the nine have seen action for the Friars. Transfers, Trevor Davock and Davis Smith have both started for Friars and lead the team in points. Austin Aviza has started all four  games in net and has recorded two shutouts on the season. Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) has started all four games thus far totaling 289 minutes and an assist. Gage Raftery (Seattle, Wash) and Lukas Rodwald (Wiesbaden, Germany) have also seen minutes for the Friars. 
 
Preseason Poll and Awards
 
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) of the Providence College men's soccer program was voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
 
Providence was voted to finish third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Georgetown, the reigning tournament champion, was selected to finish first with nine first place votes (81 points). Creighton, who finished first in regular season play last season, was picked second (68 points). Providence (65 points), Marquette (59 points) and Xavier (44 points) round out the top half of the poll. Butler (40 points), St. John's (33 points), Seton Hall (28 points), DePaul (21 points) and Villanova (11 points) finish out the standings.
