ORONO, MAINE – The Providence College field hockey team defeated 24
th-ranked Maine, 5-4, in overtime for its first victory of the season. The Friars improved to 1-1 on the year, having lost to 13
th-ranked Boston College, 2-1, in the season opener. Maine dropped to 0-2 overall. The Black Bears opened the 2019 campaign with a 3-0 loss at No. 19 Rutgers.
1stQUARTER: Maine had Providence on its heels early in the first quarter, but PC was able to settle in midway through the frame. The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 12:12 mark as
Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) fed a ball into the circle, that
Sydney Cramer (Sciota, Pa.) was able to put a touch on for a redirection into the cage. It marked her first goal of the season, and the fourth of her career.
2NDQUARTER: The Black Bears tied the game, 1-1, just 1:06 into the second quarter. Providence was able to regain the lead six-minutes later as junior
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) scored her second goal of the year (21:53). After the Friars' initial bid on goal was denied during a penalty corner, Ward connected with a bouncing ball in the circle and rifled a hard shot into the left side of the cage. Maine answered with its second goal of the quarter at 25:42 to tie the game, 2-2, at halftime.
3RDQUARTER: The teams continued to trade goals in the third quarter, with Providence taking a 3-2 lead just 3:09 into the action. Senior
Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.), who led the Friars in goals last season, tallied her first of the year off a feed from fell senior
Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.). The Black Bears responded with a goal just 24-seconds later after being awarded a penalty corner on the game's next possession. At 36:42, the Friars took the lead back, 4-3, as sophomore
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) tallied her first collegiate goal, unassisted. Graduate student goalkeeper
Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) preserved the Friars' one-goal lead as she saved a penalty-stroke opportunity at 39:38. Maine's Cassandra Mascarenhas tried to put the ball into the left corner of the cage, but Rice deflected it beyond the post.
4THQUARTER: Providence recorded eight shots in the fourth quarter, while Maine fired off seven attempts at the cage. The Black Bears were the only team to convert, tying the game, 4-4, with 12:33 remaining. The Friars earned six of their 12 penalty corners in the fourth quarter, including three in the final two minutes, but couldn't cross the goal line. The two teams would head to overtime tied, 4-4.
OVERTIME: Freshman
Nora Goddard-Despot (North Vancouver, British Columbia) scored the game-winner for Providence just 2:46 into overtime to give the Friars a 5-4 win. It marked her first collegiate goal and came off a reverse stick five yards in front of the cage.
NOTES:
- Sunday's 5-4 overtime victory against No. 24 Maine marked the first win over a ranked opponent since Aug. 25, 2017. On that day, the Friars also defeated No. 24 Maine, 1-0, in Providence, R.I.
- Seven different players scored at least one point for the Friars, including five different goal scorers.
- Rice completed the game with seven saves, while Mia Borley collected five saves for Maine.
