PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team defeated in-state rival Bryant, 2-0, on Sept. 6 at Lennon Family Field. The Friar improved to 2-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
- After a scoreless first quarter, the Friars were able to get on the scoreboard quickly in the second frame with a pair of goals in a span of 1:46.
- Senior
Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) notched her second goal of the year at 16:16 off a crossing pass from senior
Madison Deeds (Topton, Pa.) for a 1-0 lead. It was Deeds' first assist of the season, and second of her career.
- Sophomore
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) struck just under two-minutes later for her second tally of the year off a feed from senior
Allyson Parker (Orange, Mass.). Parker, who led the Friars in scoring last season, tallied her first point of the year on the assist.
- Graduate student
Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) notched her first shutout victory of the season with three saves. Two of her three stops came in the fourth quarter. Rice owns six career shutouts with the Friars.
- With the victory, Providence improved to 4-0 all-time vs. Bryant, since the Bulldogs became members of NCAA Division I.
