PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team fell to 13th-ranked Boston College, 2-1, in the 2019 season opener at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.  Junior
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) notched the Friars' lone goal, while graduate student
Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) collected five saves in the cage.

1stQUARTER: The Friars struck first to take a 1-0 lead as junior
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) found the back of the cage during a scrum in front of the cage. It marked Ward's third career goal and first since the 2017 season.  The forward missed all of the 2018 campaign with an injury.

2NDQUARTER: Boston College leveled the score, 1-1, after converting a penalty corner 19:59 into the game. Fusine Govarert was credited with the goal on a direct shot, with Charlotte Von Huelsen and Elizabeth Warner earning assists.

3RDQUARTER: Both teams fired off three shots apiece in the third quarter, but were unable to cross the goal line.  The Friars recorded the lone penalty corner of the frame just 4:24 into the action, but were denied
Allyson Parker's (Orange, Mass.) went wide.  Fellow senior
Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) nearly gave Providence the lead at 38:38. She rifled a shot, in-stride, from the right side of the circle that hit the post.

4THQUARTER: The Eagles scored the go-ahead goal at 48:53, unassisted, as Margo Carlin sent a shot to the low left had side of the cage from the right side of the circle. Providence was awarded a penalty corner with 3:38 left in the game, but senior
Izzy Mendez's game-tying goal at the left post was disallowed.Â
