OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –
Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) of the Providence College men's lacrosse team was selected as a finalist for the prestigious 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate lacrosse, as announced Friday, March 29. He is one of 10 lacrosse student-athletes among the list of finalists. The initial pool started with 30 candidates on March 4.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in the four domains of community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS award focuses on the total student-athlete.
Boyce, a senior goalkeeper for the Friars, has played in all 57 games since stepping on campus as a freshman. He holds a 9.45 goals against average, a .546 save percentage and has made 635 saves in his career. Boyce is a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, one of just two players in program history to earn this distinction. Boyce was also named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017. In that same season, he picked up USILA/Nike Third-Team All-America honors and Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-America accolades, as well. Earlier this season, he was one of 50 players named to the Tewaarton Watch List. It is the second-consecutive season that Boyce has been named to the watch list.
Boyce's character is best exemplified by the fact that his a three-time captain for the Friars. He is an irreplaceable leader for the program and has demonstrated a high level of character since joining the Providence College family. In the words of Head Coach

The senior goalkeeper has demonstrated a commitment to the community, volunteering at Hasbro Children's Hospital every Wednesday during the offseason. Additionally, he helped the program raise money for "Kids Vs. Cancer," another initiative linked with Hasbro Children's Hospital. The Friar lacrosse program also hosts a free coaches' clinic for local, offering an opportunity for coaches to learn and also help grow the game. Boyce has been a part of those clinics over the past few seasons.
In the classroom, Boyce is pursuing a degree in marketing and holds over a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. The senior is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, earning the distinction in both 2016-17 and 2017-18.
The 10 finalists were chosen by the national media. Nationwide fan voting to help select the winner begins immediately and fans are encouraged to submit votes online through May 20. Fan votes, which can be made
here, will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches. The winners will be announced during the NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.
