Friars embark on their trip to Barcelona, Spain.

The Providence College field hockey team is in the midst of a trip to Barcelona, Spain.  The team departed for the trip on March 9 and will return on March 17.  During the trip, the team will participate in training/practice sessions, in addition to playing three matches vs. Egara 35, Club Egara and FC Barcelona. While away from the field, the Friars will immerse themselves in Spanish culture and enjoy the sights of Barcelona.  The team will be checking in periodically to share its travel experience.  Here are the first two blog posts of the trip from Mary O'Reilly, Sydney Cramer and Maddie Babineau.

DAY 1:  Hola Friar fans! Thanks for following us throughout Barcelona. Our journey began on Saturday morning with some last minute packing and praying that our bags weren't overweight. Everyone's bag was okay, even though Coach Madl's bag was a close call - coming in at a light 49.8lbs - just shy of the 50lb limit.

After weighing, we all loaded the bus. We quickly downloaded our favorite podcasts (feel free to ask for suggestions) before leaving campus and then we were on our way. Everyone was in high spirits until about 5 minutes down Douglas Ave., when Madison Deeds exclaimed she forgot her mouth "custard" (aka mouth GUARD). Thankfully freshman goalie and good teammate Camryn Kelbough calmed everyone's nerves when she offered Deeds her extra mouth guard. With that issue fixed, everyone was at ease and popped back in our headphones to resume our podcasts.

Next we arrived at Logan airport and soon flew to JFK. At JFK, there was time to explore the airport. A group of us walked roughly a half marathon underground to a secluded food court where we all ate and laughed together.

Finally, after a small delay we boarded our flight, settled into our seats, took some selfies and artsy pics with our passports, and the plane finally took off over the pond to Barcelona.

Stay tuned for additional blog posts of our journey and don't forget to follow all the Instagram takeovers (Providence College Field Hockey Instagram)!

DAY 2:  Hey Friar fans!! Welcome to Day 2 of our International tour!! After we finished our long day and night of traveling, we arrived at our hotel and started our adventure overseas. As we stepped into the hotel, Coach immediately grabbed our passports so we wouldn't lose them. We got our assigned rooms and had a bit of free time to explore the town. The team split up half and half and we went our separate ways.

Half of the team explored the beach, played soccer with some local children, and ate lunch at the same place as the coaches. The other half walked down the strip and found a place to sit down and eat, which was tricky considering nothing was open. The whole team worked on their Spanish skills during our first experiences in Barcelona.

After lunch, we boarded the bus for practice. While on the bus, the whole team learned Madison Deeds found her mouth "custard" and we were all ready to step on the field. For practice, we experienced new drills taught by our tour guide, Borja. We worked on deflections and Borja inspired us to 'give it our all' by providing an incentive for scoring a diving goal. Amanda Collins was the first one to dive for a goal, but we never saw the "present". Borja tricked us. The team finished out practice by taking a ton of pictures on the field, with the sunset in the background, making sure they were "Instagram worthy."

We were all ready for dinner, so we headed back to the hotel for our buffet style meal. It was delicious! For dessert, our very own Olivia Ward received a birthday surprise for turning the big 2-0. With candles, a cake and some past stories from former Providence College field hockey player and alum, Brittany Ross, the day came to a close and the team went to bed, dreaming about Monday's scheduled game.

See you soon, Friartown! (written by Sydney Cramer and Maddie Babineau)
