Friars Overcome 13-Point Deficit To Defeat Seton Hall, 82-75

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat BIG EAST foe Seton Hall, 82-75, on Feb. 8 in Providence, R.I.  Providence improved to 14-10 overall and 6-6 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Pirates dropped to 14-9 (6-6 BIG EAST). Â

The first quarter was a track meet, with both teams shooting better than 50-percent from the field. After 10 minutes of action, the teams were all knotted up at 21-21.

Seton Hall gained a 28-23 lead in the second quarter with 6:04 remaining on the clock.  Providence's Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) trimmed the deficit to two points with a three-point bucket, but the Pirates answered with six-straight points to go ahead 36-28.  Spiwak hit another three – her third of the game – at the 2:21 mark to get Providence back within five, but the Pirates closed the half with four unanswered points (40-31).

Spiwak matched her career high in scoring with 11 points in just 12 minutes off the bench in the first half.  She hit 4-5 shots from the field, including a 3-3 performance from beyond the arc. Shadeen Samuels paced SHU with 14 points.

Providence trailed by as many as many as 13 with 5:32 left in the third quarter (52-39). The Friars wouldn't go away, out-scoring Seton Hall 14-4 to close out the frame, including an 8-0 run over the final 2:12.  Seton Hall clung to a 56-53 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Providence's continued its run in the fourth quarter as freshman Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened with a strong take to the bucket, followed by a three-pointer from senior Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.).  The 5-0 spurt to begin the quarter gave Providence a 58-56 edge.

Kaity Healy halted the Friars' run at the 8:42 mark as she banked in a three-pointer to put Seton Hall back on top, 59-58.  Jolin answered with her second three-point bucket of the quarter (and the game) with 7:54 remaining, and the Friars held on the rest of the way. Â

Seton Hall cut the lead to one on two occasions and were within two points (72-70) with 3:08 to play. After a Desiree Elmore lay-up, the Friars turned the ball over, but freshman Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) recorded a critical steal and was immediately fouled going hard to the basket.  Webb converted both free throws to spark a 6-0 run by the Friars to take a 78-70 lead with 28-seconds left in the game.

Nicole Jimenez drilled a three-pointer for Seton Hall to cut the Pirates' deficit to five, but Scott sealed the win for Providence with a pair of free throws.

Jolin finished the game with a career-high 25 points on 6-12 shooting from the field, including a 3-5 effort from beyond the arc.  She also hit 10-10 free throws on the night and grabbed five rebounds.  She scored 21 of her 25 points came in the second half.

Freshman Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) posted the fourth double-double of her career with 14 points and 14 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.  Baskerville's team-best 41 blocked shots on the season are tied for the most by a freshman in program history.

Spiwak, who kept the Friars in the game through the first 20 minutes of play, and senior Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) each scored 11 points in the win.  Webb added nine points, three rebounds, three steals and a team-high five assists.

The Friars held Samuels, who entered the game as the BIG EAST's top scorer, to just three points in the second half.  She finished the night with 17 points and eight rebounds. Elmore paced the Pirates with 22 points, while Selena Philoxy grabbed 14 boards.

Providence held a slim 41-40 margin on the glass, and improved to 9-0 when out-rebounding or recording the same number of rebounds as its opponent.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Feb. 10 against St. John's at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The game will as the backdrop for the program's annual Pink Out Friartown event.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.  All proceeds raised at the game will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.  Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
