Women's Hoops Falls To St. John's, 60-57

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 60-57, on Feb. 10 in Providence, R.I.  The Friars dropped to 14-11 overall on the season and 6-7 in the BIG EAST. St. John's evened its record at 12-12 (5-8 BIG EAST).

The Friars started the first quarter on a 9-0 run, forcing a St. John's timeout.  Out of the break, the Providence got another defensive stop and freshman Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a traditional three-point play on the other end (12-0).  St. John's finally got on the board with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter, and sparked a 6-0 run (12-6).  Providence held a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes.

Providence started the second quarter with an 8-2 run to gain a 23-12 lead with 5:30 on the clock. St. John's finished the quarter with a 15-4 scoring advantage to tie the game at halftime (27-27).  Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) led Providence with nine points on 4-4 shooting and added seven rebounds. Â

Baskerville opened the third quarter with a lay-up to put the Friars ahead, 29-27. Providence would hold the lead for the final time in the game (35-34), before St. John's took over down the stretch.  The Red Storm pushed their lead to eight (43-35) with 1:05 left in the third. The Friars cut the deficit to six heading into the final quarter.

Providence closed within 45-44 at the 8:28 mark of the fourth, but St John's held on for the 60-57 victory.

Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) led the Friars with 14 points.  Baskerville recorded her second-straight double-double and fifth of the season on 11 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points.

Alisha Kebbe led all scorers with 15 points for St. John's. Tiana England added 14 points and seven boards, while Curteeona Brelove tallied 12 points.

The Friars return to action on Friday, Feb. 15 against Xavier at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be played at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and will be televised live on FS2.  Providence remains on the road to face Butler on Sunday, Feb. 17 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go.
