Men's Basketball Falls to Florida, 83-51

Alpha Diallo recorded his fifth double-double of the season.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Florida Gators, 83-51, on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The match up was part of the Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. The Friars were led by senior Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.), who recorded his fifth double-double of the season. He scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds on the night. Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) contributed 18 points and eight boards. He shot 5-11 from the field and 8-12 from the line.
 
Kalif Young (Vaughn, Ontario) opened the scoring for the Friars on a left-wing jump shot. The Friars did not score a field goal for the next 9:39 minutes. They trailed 8-3 going in to the first media timeout. With 11:27 left in the first half, the Friars trailed 15-10 with their last eight points coming from the line.
 
The Gators went on 10-0 run to extend their lead 22-10. Watson ended the scoring drought for Providence. His second chance basket was the second field goal of the half.
 
The Friars went on a small run with a little under seven minutes left in the first half. They were led by Diallo who scored five straight points on an and-one layup and dunk on the fast break. The score was 27-17 with 6:48 left in the half.
 
The Gators had the lead, 37-22 going into the locker room. The Friars were 5-28 (17.9%) from the field, 0-9 from three-point land and 12-21 (57.1) from the line. Florida shot 13-29 (44.8%), 3-8 (37.5%) from three, and 8-13 (61.5%) from the line.
 
Florida continued to control the game with a 53-32 lead with 11:56 left in the game. The Friars were 0-8 on their last field goals. To put the Friars back on the board, Diallo scored in the paint which was quickly followed by a Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) three.
 
Providence was not able to control the game and was outscored 46-29 in the second half. Overall, they shot 15-58 (25.9%) from the field, 1-18 (5.6%) from the behind the arc and 20-34 (58.8%) from the line. The Gators were 29-57 (50.9%) from the field, 8-18 (44.4%) from three and 17-24 (70.8%). Florida was led by sophomore Keyontae Johnson, who scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
Up next, Providence will host Texas as part of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle on Saturday, Dec. 21. The game is set for tip-off at 2:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I and will be broadcasted on FOX.
