Women's Hoops Outlasts Utah, 67-60

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – The Providence College women's basketball team got out to a 22-point lead in the first half and had to overcome a difficult third quarter to defeat Utah, 67-60, on Dec. 16. It marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs, as the tipped off at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Friars improved to 8-1 on the season and halted a six-game win streak by Utah, who dropped to 6-4.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• An 8-0 run in first quarter gave the Friars a 15-5 advantage. 
• The run extended to 15-2 with 42-seconds left on the clock (22-7).
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) shot 5-6 from the field in the first quarter to lead all scorers with 14 points.
• Friars shots 60-percent from the floor in the opening 10 minutes (9-15).
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• An 8-0 run gave Providence a 22-point lead with 2:07 on the clock (41-19). 
Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) capped the run with back-to-back three-pointers in a span of 32-seconds to force a Utah timeout. 
• Utah finished the second quarter with a 7-0 run to cut the Friars' lead to 15 (41-26).
• Baskerville paced the offense with 16 points, while Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) cracked double digits with 10 points.
• Scott finished the half with nine points on 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Her previous single-game high for three-point field goals was two vs. UMass Lowell (Nov. 24).
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• The Utes extended their run into the third quarter (17-0), cutting Providence's lead to five (41-36) with 6:12 on the clock. 
Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) hit a baseline jumper with 5:57 left to halt the run and push the lead to seven, but Utah answered on the other end with a three (43-39).
• Utah tied the game, 43-43, with a pair of free throws at the 3:40 mark.
• Scott hit her fourth three of the game just moments later to put Providence ahead 46-43.
• The Friars held on to a two-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
• Providence was held to single digits in a quarter for the first time all season, as Utah held a 21-8 advantage in the frame.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Utah took its first lead since early in the first quarter with 8:03 left in the game (50-49).
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) followed with her first bucket of the game on a three-pointer to regain the lead for Providence (52-50) at 6:59.
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) dropped her first triple of the game at 5:29 to give the Friars a 55-50 advantage and forced a Utah turnover on the other end.
• The 6-0 spurt ballooned into a 12-0 run for Providence and helped the squad regain a double-digit lead (61-50) with just under three to play.
• The Friars held on down the stretch for the 67-60 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Baskerville logged just 15 minutes of action in the game, due to foul trouble in the second half, but finished with a team-best 17 points and added six rebounds.
• Scott completed the night with 14 points on 4-7 shooting from the field, including a career-best 4-4 performance from three-point territory.
• Scott added four rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
• Spiwak contributed 10 points to round out the list of double-digit scorers.
Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in nine points and a team-best seven boards.
• The Utes were led by Lola Pendande's 21 points and 10 boards.
• Utah entered the night on a six-game win streak.
