Women's Basketball Drops Opening Game Of Lobo Invitational To New Mexico, 86-68

Mary Baskerville recorded a double-double on 10 points and 14 boards.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to New Mexico, 86-68, on Dec. 18 in the opening round of the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. It marked the Friars' second loss of the season as they dropped to 8-2 on the year. The Lobos improved to 9-4 with the victory.
FIRST QUARTER:
• Friars started the game 1-8 from the field heading into the first media timeout and found themselves trailing 13-3.
• New Mexico shot 83.3-percent (5-6) during that same span, including 3-4 from beyond the three-point arc.
• The Lobos took a 22-7 lead into the break.
SECOND QUARTER:
• New Mexico led by as many as 19 (42-23) with 1:17 left in the quarter, but Providence finished the final minute of play with a 4-1 scoring edge to get within 16 at halftime.
• Providence looked a bit more familiar in the second quarter, as the Friars finally got settled in offensively. PC converted 46.7-percent of its shots from the field in the frame (7-15).
• Fifteen (15) of the Friars' 27 points in the opening half came from the bench.
• Nine different Friars cracked the scoring column in the opening 20 minutes, led by Fatima Lee (Queens, N.Y.), who tallied five points off the bench.
• Jayla Everett was nearly unstoppable in the first half for New Mexico, scoring 18 points on 6-8 shooting from the field, including 5-7 from three-point territory.
THIRD QUARTER:
• A 10-2 run by the Friars got Providence within 12 (49-37) midway through the quarter.
• Providence inched within 10 (54-44) with five-straight points, but the Lobos responded with five of their own to push their lead back to 15.
• New Mexico held a 60-46 lead heading into the final frame.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Friars cut the deficit to nine on two occasions in the fourth quarter, with the last coming at 4:27 on a Webb triple (70-61).
• New Mexico answered, once again, with five-straight points to halt the Friars' momentum.
• The 5-0 spurt ballooned into a 15-7 scoring advantage to close the game.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) recorded her second double-double of the season (and eighth of her career) with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
• Webb finished the night with nine points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc. She added a career-high five steals.
• Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) contributed seven points and matched her career high with seven boards.
• Providence shot under 40-percent from the field for just the third time this season (.393, 24-61).
• After shooting just 2-14 in the first quarter (.143), the Friars finished the game 22-47 (.468).
• Providence out-rebounded New Mexico, 45-34. The Friars' 45 boards marked a season-high and just the second time this season the team grabbed 40+ rebounds in a game.
• The Friars held Everett to just three points in the second half as she finished the game with 21 points. Antonia Anderson added 18 points, while Ahlise Hurst chipped in 14 for the Lobos.

The Friars will face Ball State on the second day of the Lobo Invitational at 6:30 p.m. (ET) on Dec. 19. The Lobo Invitational is hosted by the University of New Mexico at Dreamstyle Arena "The Pit" in Albuquerque, N.M.
