PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Stony Brook, 82-78, on Dec. 14 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved their record tp 6-5 on the season. PC was led by
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) and
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.), who both had 21-point performances. The last time two Friars scored over 20 points was against Butler on March 9
th.
"Stony Brook is a very good team," Assistant Coach
Jeff Battle said. "They battled us all the way to the end. We knew about their talent, we knew what they're capable of… but I thought our guys made some plays down the stretch, executed our press offense, made some key free throws down the stretch, to get us over the hump."
Three Friars scored in double-digits on the night. Duke put up 21 points, four rebounds and two steals. This marked his second 20-point performance of the season. Pipkins had a season high 21 points, seven assists and four rebounds. He shot a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) also contributed with 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. This marked his 20
th career double-double and fourth one of the season.
"I think today we showed toughness, resilience, shot-making and we moved the ball really well," Duke said.
The Friars opened the night with consecutive three-pointers. Pipkins scored the opening second chance basket followed by
Greg Gantt's (Fayetteville, N.C.) bucket from the right wing. The Friars kept the heat going from behind the arc with made threes by Duke and another by Pipkins. Providence led 17-13 with 11:41 left in the first.
PC went on a 7-0 scoring run led by fast break layup by Duke and a Diallo slam. The Seawolves found themselves in 3:53 minute scoring drought that was ended by an Elijah Olaniyi layup. The score was 24-13, the Friars largest lead so far with 9:54 on the clock.
With under four minutes to play in the first, Providence pressured the ball to force a Stony Brook timeout. The Seawolves could not convert coming out of the timeout and were on a 4:52 minute scoring drought. Going into the locker room, the Friars had the lead 34-24. In the first half, the Friars shot 12-31 (38.7%) from the field and 6-17 (35.3%) from three. The Seawolves were 9-29 (31.0%) and 2-13 (15.4%) from three-point land.
Stony Brook opened the second half with a 11-0 run to give the Seawolves the lead, 35-34. Diallo scored the Friars' first bucket of the half on a fast break layup to regain the Friar lead. This was the first Friar field goal after 6:32 minutes.
Providence went on a 12-0 scoring run sparked by an
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) three pointer quickly followed by a
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) jump shot and Diallo layup. The Seawolves broke the run on a made shot in the paint.
Providence had not scored a field goal since 10:33 on the clock. Duke ended the cold streak on a made three point basket form the corner. Providence held the lead 63-58 with under five minutes in regulation.
Providence was able to hold off the Seawolves last minute efforts going 10-10 from the line in the last minute. The Friars ended going 24-60 (40.0%) from the field, 12-27 (44.4%) from the behind the arc and 22-30 (73.3%) from the line. The Friars scored 29 points off turnovers and 15 off the fast break. The Seawolves shot 27-62 (43.5%), 11-31 (35.5%) from three and 13-17 (76.5%) from the line. Elijah Olaniyi led the team offensively with 25 points and nine rebounds.
The Friars will return to action on Tuesday when they take on the Florida Gators at the Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational on Dec. 17. The game is set for tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y and will be broadcasted on ESPN2.
