Women's Hoops Claims 72-63 Win At UMass

Kaela Webb paced the Friars with a career-high 22 points.

AMHERST, MASS.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated UMass, 72-63, on Nov. 9 at Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. The Friars improved to 1-0 on the year, while the Minutewomen dropped to 0-2.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Providence used a 7-0 run to take a 12-7 lead with 6:16 on the clock in the first.
• UMass chipped away at PC's lead to tie the game, 18-18, with 28-seconds left.
Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) hit one of two free throws with 0.1 remaining to give the Friars a 19-18 lead at the break.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• The Minutewomen held a 24-21 lead at the 6:54 mark of the second quarter.
• A 10-0 run gave the Friars a 31-24 lead, which included two three-point buckets from Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.). 
• Providence led by as many as eight points (38-30), but UMass closed the second quarter with four-unanswered points.
• Spiwak led the Friars with nine points at halftime on 3-4 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.), Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) and Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) each added six first-half points.
• Providence dished 10 assists on 16 made field goals in the opening 20 minutes. Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) accounted for five of the Friars' 10 hand-outs.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Friars outscored the Minutewomen 7-3 through the first 5:09 of the quarter, heading into the media timeout (45-37)
• UMass used a 9-0 run late in the third to take a 46-45 lead, but Spiwak hit a pair of free throws for Providence to put the Friars back on top (47-46).
• Williams collected a steal with five seconds left on the clock and was fouled going up for a lay-in on the break. She knocked down both attempts at the foul line to give Providence a 49-46 advantage going into the final quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• UMass crept within three (54-53) with 7:17 left in regulation.
• Providence answered with a 7-0 run to regain an eight-point cushion at the 4:01 mark.
• Baskerville hit back-to-back buckets and Webb followed with a three-pointer in the Friars' run to force a UMass timeout.
• Webb added her sixth three of the game coming out of the break to eclipse 20 points for the first time in her career and put Providence ahead, 64-53.
• Providence maintained control down the stretch for the 72-63 win.
 
GAME NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Four Friars scored in double figures on the day.
• Baskerville notched her seventh career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
• Spiwak scored a career-high 15 points on 5-10 shooting from the field, including 3-6 from three-point territory.
• Webb recorded a game and career-high 22 points on 7-15 shooting from the field, including a 6-11 performance from beyond the arc. 
• Williams added 10 points and dished five assists.
• Orlando played solid defense while contributing four points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Jim Crowley posted his 300thNCAA Division I head coaching victory.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Friars will head to West Hartford, Conn. to take on non-conference opponent Hartford on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m. at Chase Arena. Providence will return to Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium for its 2019-20 home opener on Sunday, Nov 17 against Boston College. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
