WEST HARTFORD, CONN.– Providence College women's basketball moved to 2-0 on the season with a 75-57 victory against Hartford at Chase Arena on Nov. 13. Three players scored in double figures, including a career-best performance from sophomore
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.), who scored 15 points on 7-12 shooting.
FIRST QUARTER:
• Heading into the first media timeout (4:35), the Friars held a decisive advantage in rebounding (8-2) and led the Hawks, 9-7.
• Hartford hit a three out of the timeout, which capped five-straight points and gave the Hawks a 10-9 lead.
• Providence closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 22-13 lead at the break.
• The Friars scored five points in the final 5.8 seconds of the quarter as
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) hit a three, and
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) was fouled on the play and sank a pair of free throws.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Friars led by as many as 13 points (28-15) with 6:12 left in the quarter.
• Hartford cut the lead to one (36-35) with 26-seconds left on the clock with a 14-4 scoring run.
• Webb knocked down a pull-up jumper as time expired to send Providence into the half with a 38-35 lead.
• Baskerville paced the Friars with 14 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in the opening 20 minutes of play.
• The Hawks were led by Jordan McLemore, who netted 17 first-half points on 6-6 shooting from the field, including a 3-3 performance from beyond the arc.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Providence used a 9-0 run during a span of just under two minutes to force a Hartford timeout with 4:07 on the clock. The run provided the Friars with a 51-41 lead.
• The Friars extended their run to 15-5, closing the third frame with a 57-46 lead.
• Geary netted 10 points in the third quarter and recorded two blocked shots.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• A 7-0 run gave the Friars their largest lead of the night (69-51) with 3:51 on the clock and forced the Hawks to call timeout.
• The run extended to 10-1 (72-52) giving the Friars their first 20-point advantage.
• Providence maintained control down the stretch for its second victory of the season.
GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
• Baskerville notched a team and season-high 18 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and a 6-7 performance at the charity stripe.
• Webb notched double figures for the second-straight game on 14 points. She hit four of her eight attempts from three-point territory and owns 10 three-point makes through two games.
• Webb also dished a game and career-high eight assists.
• Geary tallied a career-best 15 points on 7-12 shooting and added three blocked shots. She scored 10 of her 15 points in the third quarter.
• Rookie
Hevynne Bristow (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted a season-high eight points, including six in the fourth quarter, helping to give Providence full control of the game.
• Providence dished a season-high 22 assists on their 29 made field goals.
• Last season, in the first round of the WNIT, the Friars dished 23 assists against the Hawks.
• The Hawks got a game-high 21 points from McLemore, who finished the night 7-10 from the field (4-4 from three).
• The Friars dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks, 41-23.
• Six players on the Friars' roster checked in with 4+ rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Friars will host Boston College in their 2019-20 home opener at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. on Sunday, Nov. 17. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will serve as the program's annual Adoption and Foster Care Awareness Game.
