PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team defeated NJIT, 76-47, on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars improve their record to 2-0 on the season.
Eleven players scored for the Friars and three in double figures. The team was the led by sophomore
David Duke (Providence, R.I.), who had a career high of 21 points. He also registered five rebounds and five assists. He was 8-13 from the field and shot 60% from the three (3-5).
"We trust everyone abilities on the team," Duke said. "We have really good chemistry. As a team we understand that our shots are not always going to be there every night but we will make the extra pass. Tonight the shots were falling for me."
NJIT got on the board fast in the opening minutes on two back-to-back threes. Providence had trouble getting the ball in the basket through the first media timeout. They were 2-7 from the field in the first four minutes.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) gave the Friars the first lead of the night (8-6) after two consecutive field goals. He finished the night with 15 points and 10 rebounds, marking his second double-double of the season in as many games. Diallo shot 6-13 from the field.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) contributed early with his size. He ended the game with four points and eight rebounds. He went for 2-3 from the field.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) converted on a three-point play which gave the Friars an eight point lead with 6:46 left in the first half. He continued to score and shot 50% from three. He was the third Friar in double digits with 11 points.

Ed Cooley said. "If you are going to be a quality team, you have to sacrifice and give up yourself."
The Friars extended their lead to 13 with 4:04 left in the first half making the Highlanders call their first timeout of the game. Due to a NJIT turnover, Diallo made a bucket off a missed free throw and
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) slammed it home in under 20 seconds of play.
NJIT did not make a field goal in the last 8:30 in the first half. They scored four points off free throws. The Friars had the lead, 34-19, going into the locker room. Providence shot 45.2% (14-31) while NJIT was 27.3% (6-22). The Friars shared the ball and had eight assists on the half compared to NJIT's four.
NJIT started the half hot, outscoring Providence 8-2 in the first 4:24 of the second half to cut the lead to nine. The Friars turned the ball over four times the first five minutes.
Providence went on an 11-0 run to force a Highlanders timeout with 12:26 left. Duke and White broke the scoring drought on back to back made threes.
Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) contributed with his first made three of the night to put the Friars up 48-20.
NJIT could not buy a basket in the second half and went 7:09 minutes without scoring. The Friars improved their shooting in the second half. Duke scored his third three-point goal of the night with 6:45 left on the clock. The Friars ended the night shooting 44.4% from the field and 30.0% from three (9-30).
NJIT shot 32.7% and 19.2% from three. Zach Cooks led the highlanders with 22 points and four rebounds.
