EVANSTON, Ill.- The Providence College men's basketball team fell to Northwestern, 72-63 on Wednesday, November 13 at the Welch-Ryan Arena in the annual Gavitt Tipoff Games. The Friars were down as many as 20 in the second half but pulled it within three late. The Wildcats held off the Friars to win their first game of the season. Providence drops to 2-1 on the season.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y) paced the Friars with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Diallo has three double-doubles in as many games.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) was the only other Friar in double-figures, with 14 points.
Duke hit a pull-up jumper above the left elbow to get things going for the Friars after an 0-9 team shooting start. Duke accounted for seven of the first 10 points for Providence.
Entering the under 12 media timeout, Providence and Northwestern were locked at 13, despite the Friars shooting 26.7% from the field (4-15).
The Friars shooting struggles continued in the first half but
Greg Gantt (Fayetteville, N.C.) provided a much-needed spark off the bench, rattling off seven straight points for the Friars in just under two minutes of play to knot the game up at 22.
Providence entered the break down, 40-29. The Friars held a 20-17 rebounding advantage, including 12-3 on the offensive glass, but cold shooting plagued the Friars. Providence shot 29% (10-35) from the field and 24% (4-17) from three-point range. Northwestern shot it very well in the first half, shooting 60% (12-20) from the field, 63% (5-8) from three-point land and 73% (11-15) from the stripe.
Northwestern continued their hot shooting out of the break, going on an 11-2 run to expand their lead to 19. The shooting struggles continued for the Friars as they shot 1-8 during the run. The lone bucket came from Duke off of the left wing.
Coming out of the second media timeout,
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) nailed back-to-back three pointers from each wing to wake up the rims for Providence. Diallo (New York, N.Y.) converted a three-point play to pull Providence within single digits for the first time in the second half.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) hit a step back three-pointer to cap the 11-0 run and bring the Friars with six.
A put-back from Diallo pulled the Friars within three with 2:16 remaining, but Northwestern received a timely bucket and efficient free throw shooting to hold on, 72-63.
Northwestern had four players in double-figures, led by Anthony Gaines with 14 points. The Friars forced 20 turnovers on the night. Providence ended the night shooting 22-72 (31%) from the field and 8-35 (23%) from three.
The Friars return to the action on Saturday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. versus the Saint Peter Peacocks at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on FS2. The Peacocks come to Providence, R.I. with an 0-1 record, after falling to Bryant University, 69-44.
